I am very fond of Anathoth Farms products and quite regularly buy myself a pot to have in the fridge for the familys packed lunches if we have a sandwich or wrap I will add some in so am very familiar with their range of pickles and chutneys. I was very pleased to receive a pot of the Beetroot and Chia Seed Pickle as I absolutely love beetroot. My grandma used to pickle her own beetroot, cabbages, and onions when I was young so I grew up loving that vinegar tang and beetroot was always my favourite.

Tasting this I was not dissapointed in the beetroot flavour and tang of the vinegar, though it has a sweetness to it too which made this very easy to eat. Having that sweetness I found this very nice to eat with soft cheese on a cracker and I could quite easily over indulge as it is very moreish. I found feta to work the best as I love feta with beetroot so I also made an orzo salad using the Beetroot and Chia Seed pickle, some chopped walnut pieces, and a crumble of feta cheese and I will definitely be making this salad again it was a hit with the whole family.

The texture is great its almost thick like a jam so great for spreading in a sandwich or burger but even amazing dolloped on a steak. The chia seeds are there and while not noticeable in taste they add something different to the texture and it is great to have these added for some extra natural goodness. I love that Anathoth Farm use fresh New Zealand grown produce in this pickle and you can taste all the vegetables included just like a home made pickle knowing your getting a lot of vegetables in a very tasty way!

Upon seeing some Anathoth products come up for review I was very excited as I have previously consumed a fair amount of their lovely items and so hoped that these were likely to be on a par with them - delicious, nutritious and a great addition to my 5+ a day vegetable intake.

We are big sauce, spice, condiments people - due to the fact that with 3 children often we cook more plain for them and add more flavour or accompaniments to it for us. As well as this hubby and I like to try things such as this on a semi regular basis as part of our date night, so I thought it would be perfect to have. Being that beetroot is a sweeter vegetable I had an inkling that this might be a sweeter pickle rather than a "tarty" one. I wasn't really sure what to expect with the chia seeds in there - but being a fan of these anyway wasn't too worried.

Upon receiving my KIWIreviews package, I picked up the pot and was pleased to see a good sized jar, and struck immediately by the nice rich colour from the beetroot. The jar itself has a good sealing lid, and inside a foil seal, meaning you do not have to store it in the fridge until it is opened. When I opened the pack the pickle itself looked really nice - not overly chunky, but you could see the bits of beetroot and the chia seeds.

I decided to try it as it was first of all - straight from the container, and I was not at all disappointed. The sweet beetroot was great with the tart vinegar taste and the chia seeds helped to add a nice texture, while blending into the sauce of the pickle (if you know what I mean!) The kids all asked to try it too, and I was pleasantly surprised that all of them liked it - saying it was kind of like a savoury jam - so I take that to mean sweet, with a kick of pickle? Either way - 3 kids under 12 liking it has to be a plus!

Overall, this is a really really nice pickle, and has a lot of different uses - from straight out of the packet, to on burgers or accompanying raw vegetables. Thank goodness there are more flavours in this range - even more goodness to try!!!

Beetroot was one of those foods where I would eat it once a week, when visiting my grandparents for lunch on a Sunday, I would eat it straight but eventually I ate too much too often to the point of putting myself off the food, something which has lasted. However, I have a ten year old who is massively into beetroot, so I knew that I had to give this a try with her. Looking at the packet, my daughter wasn't too sure about giving it a try, she said it looked like it might not taste well, but she persevered and committed herself to giving it a good try. We opened it up, scooped some out and gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't too overpowering in regards to the beetroot, and I had been worried about the chia seeds texture, but it all worked well together.

My ten year old decided that we should bring this out when we had some crackers and cheese, my mother and I tried some and she really enjoyed it, having it a few more times whilst it wasn't as big a hit for me. My ten year old felt that it didn't work well with the cheese and crackers, so she went and grabbed a nice fresh cheese and bacon bread roll and honestly, put more of this on it than there was bread, in the end. She felt this was a much better use for it and has done so again, however, her preferred method of eating this is just on a spoon, which I don't mind as at least it will be eaten. This wasn't a big hit for me, but for my beetroot lover, I think we will be buying this.

In our house, condiments and accompaniments are almost as important as the meal itself. Providing the final finishing flourish, or a different flavour profile, we love eating pickles, sauces and relishes with a wide variety of foods. Having been lucky enough to try Anathoth Farm goodies before, I jumped at the chance of reviewing this beetroot and chia seed pickle, as beetroot relishes are a universally popular choice in our house. I was sure that this would be no exception. I was also interested to see what the chia seeds added to one of our long-time favourite accompaniments.

When I received the jar I was really pleased to see that it was a great size (perfect for a family for a few weeks) and it had a lovely colour. Sometimes beetroot pickles can have a very artificial-looking red tinge, but this looked like one I would make myself at home. When I opened the pack the pickle itself was not too chunky, but not smooth either- the perfect texture to add to so many dishes. As it looked so good I dived in with a spoon to give it a try, and I was certainly not disappointed with what I found. Earthy notes from the beetroot matched perfectly with vinegar sour and sweetness to give it a perfect harmonious pickle flavour. The chia seeds do not intrude at all, which is perfect for kids and adults alike. It's great to know we are all getting the nutritional benefit of these superfood seeds without even noticing they are there.

Keen to try it out as an accompaniment, it was slathered onto a sandwich with some brie and chicken. It matched perfectly, and whilst it wasn't overpowering, it gave an added flavour dimension which really lifted the sandwich. I also added it to dressings, spread it on top of baking chicken and added it as a topping on scones and savoury scrolls - all of which were delicious.

Overall, this is a real crowd-pleaser. So versatile, delicious and perfectly balanced with an added nutritional punch - what is not to love. I will be back for more!

First impressions are so important so we were very happy to find that the Beetroot and Chia Seed Pickle was sealed with the familiar foil topping featuring the landscape around Geraldine. This foil seal ensures freshness. Also impressive was the screw top lid; much more user friendly that the clip-on lids that some similar products have and which always end up with me dropping the container or spraying some of the contents around the kitchen. And finally, the rich red beetroot colour was so seductive that we could not wait to try it.

I am not the greatest fan of beetroot, but this product does not taste like plain cooked beetroot at all. It is more like a combination of a rich fruity pouring sauce and a thick chutney, full bodied and quite palatable when just eaten straight from a spoon. We could certainly taste the beetroot, but the other flavours harmonised so well with it that it was just one of many. When I checked the list of ingredients, I discovered that apple and orange are both included - which explains the fruity impression. The texture is runnier than that of some chutneys, but we still needed a spoon to add it to our meat; it was not runny enough for pouring.

Our first taste of it was with some home-made burgers, green beans, onions, and sprouted grain bread. The pickle was perfect for this meal; we all enjoyed it and went back for seconds! It was a great improvement on the sort of sauce that is served with burgers in certain fast food restaurants, not only in terms of taste and texture, but also with respect to its preservative-free nature. It is great when something that is good for you tastes delicious as well.

Next day we used it on sandwiches with cold roast beef and lettuce. That was so successful that I had to make a second batch because the children liked it so much. Although it does have a rather sophisticated tang to it, the pickle is still sufficiently mild for people of all ages. Mr Ten put away three sandwiches in a row without investigating to see whether or not we were giving him some strange new food without his knowledge, so that was a high-five to Anathoth!

For my lunch a couple of days later, I added some pickle to a plain bread roll with cheese instead of my usual pickled onion. It was different and extremely nice. Nothing like a change to the usual snack. But who wants to be predictable anyway?
