Spencer's New Pet product reviews

When Spencer gets a new pet, he's excited to do all the things that pets do--taking walks in the park, going to the vet, and attending parties together.

There's just one hitch: Spencer's new pet is a balloon.
And that means No. Sharp. Objects.
No drooling dogs at the park. No prickly porcupines at the vet. And absolutely no pinning tails on any donkeys.

Spencer's New Pet is a story of pure fun about a boy, his dog, and a friendship that endures life's sharpest...and most unexpected twists.

Spencer's New Pet is a delightful little picture book that I had the pleasure of "reading" recently. The art style is similar to that of the old black and white silent films (and in fact, there are no words at all in this book) and starts off with a young lad, Spencer, and his pet dog which is a balloon animal. We get to see Spencer and his pet having fun, playing together and basically just being shown how they are best friends. We then move onto part two, which has Spencer take his pet to the local park and a few of the dangers that are around for such a fragile pet. I thought these were quite fun.

The final part of the book shows the end results of the various dangers but it has a twist that was unexpected - which I thought was quite delightfully done and was good to have that surprise at the end. I love the illustrations and old film feel of the book, however, while this is a lovely book, some people may struggle with "rereading" this book due to the ending. That being said, I think, with the right person this book will get well read. I will be recommending this book to others, but if my kids were young enough to still need picture books, this one would have been a 'let's borrow this from the library' book.
