It's bedtime for one tired little boy. Why should he go to bed when everyone else in the house is still awake? He has a plan to keep himself wide awake ...

Take Ted Instead is a lovely little story about a little boy who doesn't want to go to bed and comes up with excuses as to why he shouldn't, hmm sounds familiar to me...

Both my children have mastered the art of delaying their bedtime. My 5 year old daughter started by needing to go to the toilet just before bed time, then needing a drink, then another cuddle, then needing to make sure she had her favourite toy of the night in bed with her. My almost 3 year old son soon picked up on what was happening and wanted in on that action. He needed to make sure he had a drink, had said goodnight to the cat and the dog and had his favourite teddy with him before he would happily go to bed. Such is our night time routine.

The story itself is very simple and uses lots of repetition and words that relate to the pictures which is fantastic for early readers. My daughter is still very new to reading but she loved the book because she could read or sound out all the words herself. My son, who has quite a short attention span at the best of times, loved it too and since it was nice and short he didn't get bored or look away once.

The illustrations were perfect for the story, big and bright and there isn't too much going on, just enough to show the story line. I was a little confused by the images of the girl though, I couldn't quite figure out if it was an older sister or the mother, I'm still not entirely sure but I'm leaning towards the mother based on the end picture. I think the illustrator could have made this a little more clear but it's such a minor thing that doesn't actually affect the story at all and neither of my children picked up on this. I gave the book to my neighbour to read to her 2 year old son and she had the same question I did about this girl but she just assumed the girl was an older sister so it could easily work both ways.

Personally I found the price to be rather on the high side for the simplicity of the story but the quality of the book and the illustrations are very good so I can see some parents or grandparents buying this for their children. If it were up to me though, I would want a little more of a story for that sort of money. As a gift though, it's great.

My 3.5 year old daughter is book mad and loves a nightly story before bed. Tonight we decided to read "Take ted instead". My daughter was excited the minute she saw the front cover and pointed out "that's like my bear" that she takes to bed each night. I love the fact that although the book looks big it is actually quite quick to read. For my daughters age group I think that is perfect as it held her interest the entire time and she didn't get bored.

I loved the simplicity of this book. The pictures on every page are bold, bright and nice and simple. They pages aren't cluttered with too many words they are really basic and straight to the point along with being easy to follow. My daughter was quick enough to pick up on the rhymes with words ending in "ed" and she loved trying to remember or work out what the rhyming word would be on each page. This book really rung true to my daughter as she could relate. She procrastinates before bedtime and thinks of a thousand things she could be doing just like the wee boy in this story.

I think the price of the book, in my opinion, is quite high at $30 so am unsure if I would purchase this based on the price. But on the basis of the story line, the pictures and the quality of the book I would. I think this is a book that definitely could be reread again.
