Orcon product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsThe internet is at the heart of everything we do at Orcon - from providing broadband services to homes and businesses across the country, to a raft of hosting and domain services.

We also offer fixed-line and mobile services, to deliver a full communications solution, no matter what you need. We know innovations lead to customer benefits, and are focused on continually pushing the boundaries to deliver the latest and greatest stuff to New Zealanders. We were the first to unbundle the local loop in New Zealand, leading to more competition and better prices.

We are pretty proud of that, and also have a few more tricks up our sleeve. We are New Zealand owned, and our team is filled with people who love the internet, and are knowledgeable and helpful, which is a good thing. As we say here: We are small enough to care, big enough to make a difference. We are all about the internet. The internet is everything.

NOTE: Orcon is part of the CallPlus Group. As of 1st of July, 2014, the CallPlus Group includes Slingshot, Flip and Orcon.

I am a new customer to Orcon, I chose to go with Orcon because of the $99 unlimited internet plan that works for us with a hubby that loves online gaming, a teenager that spends half his time doing god knows what online and me who is a social networking addict! Included in the plan we get free local calls with the landline.

I use the Orcon Genius app which means my iPhone acts as the landline and I can also use this when out providing I am connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data which means I don't miss any calls made to the landline and am not charged from my mobile for calls made using the app. I find this perfect for me!

The expected set up wait time was 7-10 days but my modem arrived around 4 days after signing up and a technician was out the next day setting everything up for me. I had read a lot of bad feedback on Orcon's Facebook and Twitter page AFTER signing up with them but they made any doubts disappear with the speedy set up.

Calls to Orcon have been answered quickly with reasonably friendly staff who are happy to help and answered any queries I had and helped me accordingly.

So far so good, No complaints at all.

You know those adverts on TV for internet service providers, that promise you the best service, fastest broadband, and well ya know..they promise you the world for a really cheap price! This is what Orcon promised...but Oh my god they do not even come close to delivering Sad Icon

We switched internet service providers at the end of November 2013, swapping from Slingshot to Orcon, because Orcon promised faster broadband, more GBs for our $$, and we had been having a few problems with Slingshot in the months prior. I will give credit where credit is due - It is fast, painless, and easy to switch to Orcon, in fact the phone call to do so was all done within 10 minutes. But that is where being pain-free ends. Since switching we have had nothing but problems.

Our actual internet service is horrendous, constantly timing out. We phone customer service, even that was a mission and after ages of being on hold and mucked around, we finally got to speak with someone, who then told us our service was perfectly fine and they had no record at all that the internet was logging out. I have spent the passed two days recording each time the internet times/logs out, because this was Orcons solution to the problem - have me do their job. (In a 2 hour and 40min period (not including the 1 hour we left and went away), the internet stopped working 10 times yesterday and in a 2 hour and 3 minute period this morning, it stopped working 9 times).

Sadly we are locked into a 12 month contract. Being charged full price for a service that is so poor, we end up just using our mobile data on our cellphones. Pages take ages to load, photos or videos take sometimes up to an hour to upload to a page...I haven't even bothered trying to download anything. Am so over the service, but as they have said - it is all working perfectly from our end, I'm not sure what steps to take now.

I will do another review on Orcon, after this gets sorted...if it does!

I have been an Orcon customer since the start of the year, and have had little to no problems. Any problems I have had have been solved as quickly as possible.

They have affordable plans without the extra (hidden) costs, which make budgeting easy. Their plans vary between 30GB for $80 to unlimited for $99. so you can choose your plan depending on the amount of internet you use and how many people in your household use the internet.

If like my house there is only two of us on the internet the 30GB plan works well for us and we have never gone over. I have also been able to log into my account online and set for an email and/or text to be sent to me when ever we reach 25GB. This allows me to know when it is time to slow down on internet usage via various forms of technology that we have.

The only issue I currently have with this service is that because the landline phone is connected through the internet we can only have one phone in the house unless we buy an extension and run it throughout the house (which I personally cannot do). It also means that during a power cut we cannot use the phone.

Overall I have Orcon to be an excellent internet and phone provider.

We have been Orcon customers (homeline, broadband and tolls) for a couple of years now and although we had heard negative things about them we have never had a problem until last week. Like all service providers the true test is when you have a problem.

On Thursday last week our phone would do a single ring and go dead when someone was trying to call us. I rang Orcon to report the problem and when I finally got through they suggested it was my handset that was the problem and I should try other handsets and phone jacks. I did this while talking to them and we got cut off. Orcon never made an effort to contact me and I didn't want to waste anymore time that day.

On Saturday I rang them again and this time the person in the call centre tried to blame it on the modem. They didn't listen when I explained my phone wasn't through the internet. I pleaded for them to divert all calls to my mobile as we were missing out on lots of calls on my daughter's birthday. He reluctantly arranged this. He also said he would send out a contractor from Chorus but it wouldn't be for 24 to 48 hours excluding the weekend. He was unaware that it was also Anniversary day on Monday.

On Monday I contacted Orcon through their website to inform them that our phone now wasn't working at all, our internet was cutting out frequently, and the calls weren't being diverted to my mobile (I know because we tested it on several different phones and they all cut immediately cut off or the engaged tone). The response from Ocron was that the calls were being diverted and they were still working on resolving my issue.

On Thursday at lunchtime a Chorus contractor finally rang my mobile and informed me he was coming in about an hour to fix my phone. When he came out I explained to him as I had in both calls to Orcon that the Ultra Fast Broadband people had been digging outside our place (we had heard of others that had similar issues). They had all told us that wouldn't be the issue. Well it was the problem the Chorus man found after nearly two hours of investigating both inside outside our home.

What happened to the customer is always right? The whole issue could have been solved much quicker if Orcon had listened to me. We originally went with Orcon because they were the best value for money but we are now currently looking into other ISPs.
