Whenever I have an open packet of sultanas or raisins, I become a compulsive nibbler. Alas, these soft dried berries are very similar - like a cross between a raisin and a currant - and I had just as much difficulty stopping myself from eating the whole packet in one go. They have a tart sweetness which has just the right balance and quite a strong flavour so go best with foods that are not too highly flavoured. I sprinkled a tablespoon of them on to my cereal and thoroughly enjoyed it. And then I put the rest of the packet away so that I could get a few other people to comment while there were still some left ...
My friends each took a small handful to test. There is a generous 100 grams in the packet, and you get a lot of berries - being dried, they weigh quite light so, although the pack is quite expensive, the blurb on the back indicates that there are ten servings and I would support that. My older friend (a pensioner) is on a restricted income but she said she would buy these as they taste really good and would last her for a while. However, like me, she said she would have to be wary of binge eating!
Her daughter was not so impressed. She thought the apple flavour took over from the berries; in fact, she actually identified the apple before I could tell her the ingredients. As she is not keen on apple, this was a minus for the product as far as she was concerned - although she was impressed that it has a high Vitamin C content and felt that it might be a useful dietary supplement. She thought the berries would go nicely with an unsweetened natural yoghurt. Having a demanding job means that she tries to take high energy natural food for lunch, and yogurt often features as it is a useful convenience meal.
Both mother and daughter felt that the suggestion on the pack to serve it with nuts would not work as the strong flavours would drown each other out. I am not sure about that - I think they would go well with milder flavours like cashew, or even with small pieces of coconut, and am going to test out these combinations myself. At some stage, too, I can see them being tasty in plain baked muffins. Just so long as I don't finish the rest of the packet first!
