A fun picture book about a messy girl and her dog trying to keep clean for her big performance!
Molly is very messy, so she tries to practice keeping clean during the week to prepare for her big singing performance at her school on Saturday. But she puts on her dress and gets messy while eating spaghetti, being out in the rain, falling in the mud, baking a cake, eating ice cream, and playing in the grass. On Saturday, she works as hard as she can to avoid all the messes she encountered during the week. Molly makes it to the performance squeaky clean! Well, almost; she does have a few pawprints on her back from her dog, but no one can see them!
As soon as we picked our review goodies up Miss 3 insisted that she have one of her books to read in the back seat on the drive home. Miss Molly was her picked and I could hear her telling me all about the story during the drive home, she was certainly engaged with this book and was loving reading it and looking at the pictures. Funnily enough one of the songs that she sings at daycare is called Miss Polly and so for some unknown reason she began telling me it was her Miss Polly book (I hadn't told her that the book was called Miss Molly). From all that I had heard from Miss 3 about the book it sounded like such a neat book which I was looking forward to reading to her once we arrived home.
I'm sure all parents can relate to Molly in the story, Molly has a performance and so needs to stay clean for the day which as everyone knows isn't an easy task for a young child, especially one such as Molly who loves to play in the rain, jump through the mud and eat ice creams! I know I certainly have a tough time keeping Miss 3 clean and tidy at times! Molly tries so hard to keep clean and does so well only getting a few muddy paw prints on her back right before the show but luckily no one notices! Miss 3 and I laughed and joked about this as only a few weeks ago she was going to a birthday party and insisted on wearing her rabbit party dress first thing in the morning, although the party wasn't until the afternoon promising me she would stay clean and tidy just like Molly had done.
The pictures in the book look to be done through the use of pencil sketches and also only feature a few other colours throughout the book, yellow, green, red and white which I found quite interesting and different as I am used to books being full of colour, these colours look as though they had perhaps been done through the use of a screen printer? The pictures were however gorgeous and very well done and really went with the story being told, they provided so much conversation for both myself and Miss 3 and we just loved looking at them together.
Such a neat book which has been loved by Miss 3 and all of the children at my daycare whom I have read it to, full of so many surprises and lots of opportunities for laughter as you never know what Molly is going to do next! Already a very loved book which i'm sure will be read again and again.
Firstly I love the cover of this book. It is slightly textured and glossy and just lovely to look at and hold. Messy Molly is written by Jo Williamson who also wrote how to be a dog which I love. I wasn't expecting to love this book any less and I was right. My Miss five is just learning to read so she is liking reading picture books to learn her words and this book has kept us laughing. Jo Williamson not only wrote the book but illustrated it also and the illustrations were just so perfect and spot on with the reality of a young child.
Any mother can relate to the story that starts with "Molly starts each day looking lovely and clean..." Its such a true beginning to most parents days. I love the story but even more loved the illustrations.
This book makes me chuckle every night that I read it with my daughter and I love that it is a book that we can laugh over. I can definitely recommend this book and it is perfect for any child who is a Messy Molly or who just loves reading a funny story with beautiful illustrations. A perfect birthday gift.

The Scavenger species are circling. It is, truly, the End Days for the Gzilt civilization. An ancient people, organized on military principles and yet almost perversely peaceful, the Gzilt helped set up the Culture ten thousand years earlier and were very nearly one of its founding societies, deciding not to join only at the last moment. Now they've made the collective decision to follow the well-trodden path of millions of other civilizations; ... more...
