New Zealand's favourite flavoured tuna. Perfect in a sandwich, tossed over a salad or just straight from the can.
Sealord Tuna is always a hit in our house, we always have a can or three here on hand. But we had never tried the satay one (didn't even know it existed!). The packaging is always appealing and attractive and easily seen on the shelf with many other cans of tuna, chicken and other fish products. The size of the can (95g) was perfect for a snack and while I was debating whether to put it on crackers, mixing it with rice won out and is a flavour I would definitely buy again. I love how versatile it is, and the shelf life is long.
The not so positive side was although it was tasty, it could have been more flavoursome as the satay taste wasn't very strong and hard to distinguish the flavour when mixed with rice (so might have been ok with crackers on its own). It was also needing more sauce as was a bit dry.
The texture was smooth and there were decent sized pieces of tuna. I will happily keep this in the cupboard for a low calorie snack or small meal. Although we haven't tried with this flavour, I would be keen to try it as a nicoise salad by simply tossing in tomato, hard boiled egg and nuts.
Oh, this was the worst 'best decision' I have made in a long time. But I'll get to that. Opening the can is very easy. it's a tear-off lid which means that once you have used a spoon or knife to pry up the tab, it's pretty easy to get the can open even for those of us who have poor grip strength. As long as you can get a finger through the hole in the tab, the rest isn't too bad.
Opening the can releases a very tasty smell that had me very keen to get this into a bowl and heated up. Once it had been warmed through it became a lot softer in texture and I mixed a couple of tablespoons of plain mayonnaise to thin it out a bit and make it into more of a spread. It was lovely to have on some soft white bread rolls that one of my mokopuna had dropped off earlier that morning. But I found that the small chunks of peanuts that are mixed in started to work their way under my lower dentures, causing some very painful moments of chewing. This is no fault of the product of course, but any denture owners may want to be wary of this.
Even with that said, I think it was worth the risk for me, because this tasted really good. In my younger days I tried Satay in Indonesia, and that is something you really have to experience for yourself. This stuff was nothing like that, not even in the same league, but it was a very good approximation for the milder kiwi tastes. I enjoyed it, and may look to having it again once I get new dentures maybe.
I have tried a few different flavours of the Sealord Tuna Sensations range after being introduced to them by a work colleague, so it was an easy choice to review the new Satay flavour.
I took this can of tuna to work to have for my lunch with leftover home-made potato salad and I must say as soon as I opened the can I was impressed by how jam packed the can was, with next to no oil. I gave it a bit of a sniff and it smelled fantastic! I ate it direct out of the can and when I took my first bite I was pleasantly surprised by all the peanut pieces that were mixed in throughout the tuna and the scrummy satay flavour. I have tried a few ready to eat canned foods and I must say Sealord have nailed this flavour, it has just the right mix of spices and nuts that really made the tuna so delicious to eat.
I decided that on my next visit to the supermarket I would buy some more cans to have in my pantry and as luck would have it they were on special for 4 for $5! I came home and decided the tuna would be a great addition to my children's school lunch wraps, replacing the same old boring ham they always have. My eldest daughter texted me from school and said the wrap was yummy and could I make that again tomorrow. So naturally, high scores all round from us for Sealord Satay Tuna Sensations.
WOW I think hands down the best tin tuna I have ever had!!! when I opened the tin the first thing to stand out and that I noticed was that it wasn't swimming in oil or had a access amount of oil. I noticed it looked thick and it smelled great. I tried this satay tin tuna on cruskit crackers and I feel in love with the flavour straight away. I loved how it was thick in sauce and not oily and running and also how the flavour of satay was strong but not over powering.
I think for the value of the money and how much tuna is in the tin, this would be a product I will be buying from now on when I do my weekly shopping. I got 5 spreads of tuna on my cracker, which was a perfect amount for lunch and I enjoyed having the satay flavour stay in my mouth after lunch. As sometimes tuna be be over powering and you feel like you need to brush your teeth afterwards.
I let my son try some of this as well to see what his views were on the flavour and he said it was yummy and asked for more. Which was interesting as I didn't think he liked satay flavoured food but now he does. So yes I will buy this flavour tuna again, satay is my new favourite tuna flavour.
I dig peanut satay. Have ever since my first accidental taste as a kid when I mistook an open jar of satay sauce for peanut butter and slapped it on my fresh toast. Peanutty, spicy, tasty, unique, and best of all... versatile. And here we have it, pre-mixed with tuna - my favourite of all the fish - and slapped in a can that has a tear-tab seal. Ready to take anywhere, pop it open and slather it on bread, toast, rice, wraps, or dip your corn-chips into it.
Having a can all to myself to review was a wonderful feeling... but what to do with it? I found myself a little stumped - I had so many ideas, but I didn't want to risk mutilating the flavour of the product by adding it to something that had an equal, or stronger, taste profile... so I fell back on my first encounter... on toast.
Not very imaginative, but it did give me the ultimate benchmark to measure against. But, just because I can't resist pushing the envelope a wee bit, I sliced some "Fresh 100s" mini tomatoes on top and gave it a light grind of fresh black pepper. First bite, and I was blissed, this was a really wonderful, smooth, creamy flavour with small chunks of peanuts scattered throughout. A mild hint of spice buried in the back was too little for my tastes, but I know that I like my food spicier than some, so it's easy to see how this would be milder than my own ideal. Still, there was enough there to satisfy the craving in me.
I have gone out and bought up on these in bulk, since the local supermarket has them on special at the moment, and I plan to experiment: Sushi, rice-paper rolls, quesadillas... heck, I even have an intriguing idea for a sort of wonton filling using these and a few extras.
Overall, this has taken its place at the top of my list of great snack foods that can also be ingredients... and I just can't wait to see what comes of my ideas. It will always have a place in my pantry.
