BITE ME! Sharing is optional. Delicious pieces of our famous slices packed into a convenient, resealable container, ready to devour. Found in leading supermarkets (and hidden from the kids on the top shelf in a few pantries). Available in four delicious flavours: Lollie, Cookie Caramel, Ginger and Gluten-Free Brownie.
This Ginger slice is simply not worth competing with. Chewy oat base topped with smooth ginger icing and just the right amount of zing!
Ginger crunch brings back childhood memories of baking with Mum. She would double the icing and it was delicious. I often choose ginger crunch when I an in a bakery or cafe but have not baked it myself since I left home. When I was given Bite Me's ginger to review I knew I would love it and secretly hoped my children didn't so there would be more for me to enjoy.
To my disappointment Miss 7.5 and Miss 6 have inherited my love of ginger crunch. The 14 pieces in the carton disappeared very quickly.Unlike my Mother's version Bite Me's contained oats which I thought my girls would put off by but no such luck. I had to share the whole carton with them. The ginger icing was lovely and sweet just like my Mum's. There was a good crunch to the base and together it was fabulous.
A couple of things I noticed with all the Bite Me products was although they came in a resealable airtight carton there was no freshness/tamper seal.It was however a number 1 plastic which most recyclers accept. There was also no date of manufacture or best before date which I expected. Although the products I had were all very fresh and top quality this would make it harder for ensuring correct stock rotation and to do recalls if needed.
Thank you KIWIreviews for introducing me to a great range of bites at a very affordable price.I will be buying the ginger crunch as a treat for my mother if I can find them in the supermarket.
I really like ginger crunch. In fact it was one of the main thing I craved when I was pregnant with my second child. As a result I know all the best and the worse places to go and buy this slice. Lately I have noticed a trend to change up the base and how that is presented, while still having that traditional thick layer of ginger icing.
In this Bite Me Ginger, the morsels we encountered were part tradition and (at least for us) part modern twist. Usually the biscuit base is like a sugar, butter and flour mix that has been lightly baked. But this base has oats in it. As a result, it is slightly rough feeling on your tongue as you are eating it. That texture could be an issue for some, and I did find it a little unpleasant. However, the taste of the ginger icing and the texture of that, more than made up for the base.
The icing was buttery, and a great consistency. The flavour hit of ginger was right on the money and I really liked that light burning sensation you get from this ginger slice. Because of that buttery consistency, it also rounded the roughness of the base out and all the flavours balanced in perfect harmony. In our group, who tried the slice, I was the only one with an issue with the base texture. Everyone else thought it was innovative and delicious. That texture was something I could easily get past too. As demonstrated by my eating more of the bites.
I really liked the convenience of these Bite Me packs. They were so easy to store, and to open. They were super convenient for having guests over. I chose to put the slice bites on a plate, but I really didn't need to. I could have served them right in the container because they make the perfect "bowl" for the product. The price is in line with a packet of biscuits and they are way flasher than a biscuit! I could see this ginger slice as the perfect thing to take to a Mainly Music morning tea or to a PTA meeting, or to take a long to a workshop to make those techie guys work.
Normally I like ginger, gingernut biscuits are always nice when they aren't the rock-solid kind. However, I'm afraid to say that this was not one of the more pleasant examples of ginger-based dessert items that I've witnessed. I found that the ginger flavour was quite strong, and it began to resemble the immediate burn that comes from eating a spicy dish.
Strong flavour aside, though, these bites weren't actually that bad. The oats in the main body of the slice itself made for a nice texture, and the taste wasn't half bad, it was the ginger icing that was the big problem. The icing had an almost crystalline texture, more so than icing usually does, so it felt a bit gritty. On the upside, the combined tastes of the oats and the ginger made this slice taste quite similar to a gingernut biscuit, which serves as a mark in its favour.
Overall, I would not call this product "bad" as such, but out of the other 3 products of this brand that I got for review, this would have to be my least favourite. The portion size was just fine for me, I would say that this is something I might try again after a while when my tastes may have changed slightly. However, I would still recommend this product, as it was still of good quality, it has a very reasonable price, and it will most likely work well for people who REALLY love the taste of ginger. Enjoy.
I quite like ginger crunch myself, though being the only one in the house that likes it, it's not something that I tend to make a lot of, so when I saw this come up for review I took it as the perfect opportunity to get some of this yummy gingery goodness for myself, with the idea in mind that I wouldn't need to share it with the rest of my household...... well how wrong was I! Arriving home from work this afternoon I walk into the kitchen to find an EMPTY Bite Me Ginger tub!!!
I have to say that this is truly the most delicious tasting ginger crunch I have tasted in my life, it tastes so homemade and even healthy, and beats any other store brought or home made version hands down. The base is made from delicious golden toasted oats and has a lovely flavour to it, this is then topped with a thick gingery icing, which is smooth and glossy with just the right amount of ginger to it. Upon returning from work I asked my partner what he thought of it and he said that it is the only ginger crunch he's ever liked, mainly due to the generosity of the scrumptious ginger icing.
The bites come in a neat little packaging that is see through, this allows you to see exactly what the product looks like before buying, always a selling factor for me. It is easy to open and close and the pack seems to be quite sturdy and to actually stay shut. I really liked that these bites contain no added preservatives or colours.
Such a yummy treat, I will be buying again however have yet to source this flavour in the Bites range at any of my local supermarkets.
Oh lordy, I have waited a long time for a Ginger Slice as nice as this. So creamy, it just melted in my mouth. I had to be strong and eat each 'bite' in two nibbles, otherwise I fear I would have simply up-ended the container into my mouth and gone hard-core chipmunk-cheeks... and since I had a friend visiting at the time, I fear that would have removed what little dignity I could muster.
Opening the pack was a breeze, and as soon as I did the smell of ginger hit me. I love the smell of ginger, and try to use it in cooking as often as I can, purely for the pleasure the aroma filling the room gives me as it cooks. That said, pretty much every ginger slice I have tried - store-bought and home-made by others - has been a bit of a let down. This version though, it was something so very different. A nice, thick, creamy layer of ginger icing that simply melted in my mouth from the body heat, was astonishing in it's ability to short-circuit my taste buds and just fire off the pleasure centres in my brain.
There were about 14 bites in the container, I think. To be honest, as soon as I opened the pack and the smell hit, I wasn't really thinking straight. I do recall seeing a slab of 4 or 6 at one point, but that is more a vague mental screengrab than a clear memory really. Either way, I suddenly realised that I was fumbling around in an empty container, and I was hit by a wave of "Awwwwww.... dammit!".
Overall, I wish I had been able to get other opinions on this, but I vaguely think my friend got to try a bite or two, made some kind of positive noises about the flavour and texture... but I half suspect she got a little bit lost in them too. I'm certain I couldn't have polished off the entire container by myself, but all I can clearly remember is that first bite giving me goosebumps of delight. Methinks I may have to try it again. And maybe once more after that. Possibly another after that one too... and...
This product comes in a plastic container which is useful when the sweets are being carried around. The pieces are protected so they do not break up, and they actually present an attractive appearance when you look at them through the clear lid. The portions are rather moreish; I found that I could easily eat three one after the other. When I checked on the outer wrapping, however, I found that the recommended serving IS three pieces, so I stopped feeling greedy and just enjoyed them.
In terms of categorising them, I could not decide whether they were a large lolly or a small slice. In the end I decided to be guided by the name: "Bite Me" gives the impression that they are designed to be bitten into two halves (unless you have a very big mouth in which case you will eat them in one go!). As for whether they are a lolly or a slice, it does not matter in the end. Either way they are scrumptious.
The bites have a firm, fairly dense base and a creamy ginger flavoured topping. You can taste the ginger but it does not take over. In fact, you get the feeling that you are eating something that just might be good for you. Miss Four gave them the thumbs up and declared that she liked them; I had expected she would find the ginger too sophisticated but that was not the case so I was obliged to share.
I liked the fact that the product is not too sweet. The slightly nutty texture of the oats and coconut which form part of the base ingredients goes well with the richness of the generous ginger topping. The effect is that of a home made slice, and it is quite filling. This is one I will buy again for packed lunches (or midnight snacks).
