It is small and compact, easily fits in your top pocket like a normal usb flash drive, but where it lacks in length it makes up for it in width. It is very light and made of plastic. it feels like and looks like it should be a much stronger technical device but it just has a plasticky feel. Not so much cheap but what I am trying to say is it looks better than it feels. The USB slider lock works really well. When you have retractable devices they are often not strong enough for the push in force and it pops them back in the hole when trying to insert them.
This one stays locked tight even with the firmest of USB connections. I tested the transfer rate in real world environment by transferring the Spongebob Squarepants Atlantis episode/movie over onto it. I have USB 2 and 3 so I thought I would have a quick comparison. USB 2 transferred at around 15-20mb/s once it settled down. That is pretty damn good and the rear USB 3 connection on my tower transferred at 35-40 mb/s once it settled down. That is a pretty simple test for one file so I thought I would see how it handled files in bulk.
USB 3 performed a bit worse transferring about 800 items and 800mb at a speed of 10mb/s and deletion came in at 50 items per second. USB 2 transferred at about 7 and towards the end settled on 9mb/s which was interesting. Roughly the same item deletion rates also. I am not too worried at all with this because the great thing is this memory intermediary drive is that its a massive 64jiggawatts in size! that's 64gb I mean! I don't even have a removable memory stick with that capacity!
As far as the locking goes of the slider it works a tad strangely. When USB is out the slider is locked and you have to press the slider in like a medicine bottle child lock to slide it back to the middle. When you are on the lightning edge out it just slides back in without a lock. When you are in the home position where both are retracted you need to push to slide the lightning edge out but not the USB?? So I guess if you were unlucky the USB might slide out in your pocket, but at least that it shielded, the lightning connector is not, so anything touching the pins may or may not affect the operation in time.
Lexar has an app can automatically backup your contacts and other items like photos from the iPhone or iPad to the M20i, and will also connect to Dropbox, YouTube and Vimeo. The I in the model indicates that this device is for the later model Apple products only, not the Android OS. Plugging into our iphone 6 it prompted me to install the Lexar Mobile manager then it asked me to allow various privileges. One easy click had me backing up the contacts, then the photos. 211 pics took a few minutes to back up but they are all very large images.
The Spongebob movie transferred over at about the same speed that it copied via USB and streamed from the device also. Because of the storage space you get with this device I believe it is worth every cent and it performed great. The app is a really nice cherry on the top of an otherwise well rounded product.
