My children are all pre-teen or teenagers now and a little past the need for high chairs and similar style chairs for themselves, so looking for and deciding on a safe seat for a baby/toddler was not something I thought I would be doing anytime soon. However, we were blessed with a granddaughter last year, and so all those baby things I thought I was well past, were brought back into my life. My youngest child is 10 now, and in just 10 short years, so much has changed when it comes to things on the market for a baby.
10 years ago I would have just used cushions, tri pillow, and other pillows to prop around my little tot as they were learning to sit, but the look my son gave me the one time I attempted that, was enough for my to know, they did not think pillows were gonna save their precious bundle when she fell sideways or forwards. Learning to sit, is such a big step lol
So online I went to find something more appropriate. I needed something funky, no reason, other than I like funky things (& if I'm paying for it lol), it needed to be durable, well made, easy to use, and small enough to not take over my home like the million and one other items she apparently 'needed' So after a lot of getting side tracked, sighs at the prices of things, and many websites later, I decided on the bumbo, with added tray accessory...in red! My decor is red and chocolate brown so it seemed the most fitting colour hehe
I admit the price was a bit more than what I would generally pay for something, but there was a local sale so I was ok with the reduced price. Plus, as I was going to be viewing first, I wasnt committing myself to something I did not really know much about. Off to the shops I go. What a great wee seat, especially with the tray added, baby fits snugly in there while still able to move freely. The seat is soft yet very durable, and shaped to fit comfortably around little people. And there is a safety strap, so if you forget to put the tray back on or something you know you have strapped them in safely too.
So I bought a bumbo...yes in red! And it was perfect for my little grand-baby to learn to sit in. she was comfortable and able to sit and snack while watching her dad do homework, or if treated to a cartoon, and it was perfect for sitting outside. We only ever used it on the floor/ground. As she got older and could sit perfectly on her own without support, we continued to use it for her to sit and explore food at meal times. We happily used the seat from 5-11 months and then found that she was no longer happy being confined sitting on the floor, and we moved on to a high chair.
So it is a really cool little seat, but as many would possibly be like us and only use for a short duration of time, the price is possibly more than most would want to pay. But, if you are only starting your family, and intend on having more children, or perhaps you run a daycare or home based child care then the price would make it more worth while. Its a really cool little seat.
I had heard a lot of mixed reviews about the Bumbo Baby Seat, some were fantastic and others not so good. However when my daughter turned 5 months old and was almost able to sit herself upright I looked into different items which could be used to support her with sitting upright. I decided to go out and buy a Bumbo Baby Seat for this reason as it seemed to be the best product I could find on the market for the job I wanted it to do, there were cheap knockoffs about, but as a parent, early childhood teacher and first time Mum I felt better knowing that we had the original.
There has been a lot of conflicting information in regards to the Bumbo in the past, with children falling out of them and injuring themselves etc, but the company has worked hard to resolve this problem by making a safety seat belt like strap that attaches to the seat itself and buckles into the front. The Bumbo can be purchased as is with just the seat or you can add on the play tray for around $20 more.
I decided to purchase the seat (in blue) but there are a wide range of colours available and also the play tray. The seat itself feels pretty secure and is quite soft and kind of moulds to your babies body, I had no problem with my daughter fitting properly, and the seat seemed to really support her back well, the biggest problem I faced with the chair was my ability to remove the play tray as it quite firmly attached to the chair, which did make removing my daughter from the seat very difficult with having to try and unlatch the tray with her still in the seat, no the easiest thing to do. Other than the removal of the tray the tray is truly magnificent its an ideal to place babies toys for ease of reach and it also doubles as a great tray for putting food on. You can leave your baby alone for a few minutes with the security of knowing they are safe and secure (obviously you wouldn't leave them sitting on a bench top etc, but the ground is fine!).
I would recommend the Bumbo Baby Seat to parents of babies such a handy and compact little seat that is easy to wipe clean, the price is a little on the steep side however!
