We were lucky enough to be selected to review this book, I am a bit of a sucker for books about mums or dads as I think they are such a special type of book to share with your children. Being around mothers day we received this book it made it even more special as me and my 3 year old could cuddle up and read about why the animals mums were the best. The ideas in the book were quite simplistic like the fish thought her mum was the best because she took her to school so they are all things your children can easily relate to.

We talked as we read about how I did the things in the book that the other animal mums were doing so it is a very special book for sharing with your children. Although the book is pink in colour it is still a book that can be enjoyed by boy children as there is nothing in it that would suggest it is just for girls and my boy really enjoyed the story. Each page has one simple sentence so great for children my sons age with short attention spans and also good as they can get a good memory of the story.

The book is beautifully illustrated and we loved the way the animals took on human characteristics like the little fish going off to school with his school bag. We had a giggle at the pictures and it si easy to see what is happening on each page by looking at the pictures which meant my 3 year old could look at each page and recall the words I had read the time before.

This is a rather special book and would make a great gift as it comes in hard cardboard slipcase aswell as being a hard cover book itself so it will be a long lasting good quality book to add to your book collection. The other cute thing was that it had a magnetic photo frame that you could put on your fridge with a photo of your own mum. My 3 year old thought this was a great idea and took it straight to the fridge.

As soon as we took the shrink wrap off the outside of the boxed version of 'My Mum's The Best', my children realised that it wasn't an 'ordinary book'. Miss 3 enjoyed pulled the book from the strong cardboard sleeve (and continued to put the book in and out of the sleeve over the following days). Mr 5 realised that the heart shape attached to the front of the book was able to be taken off. It was a magnetic picture frame. I needed to help a bit with taking the magnet off as I think it could have been damaged if I had left it up to the kids. The glue was pretty strong holding the frame in place. As soon as I had freed the frame from the glue, Mr 5 took it to the fridge. It is still on the fridge waiting for a nice photo of the kids and me - perhaps Mother's day will be the day to fill it up.

We were now left to look at and enjoy the book. The book has a strong, hard cover. I would imagine that it will become a family favourite so having the hard cover is definitely an asset.

I read it to the children. As we read, Mr 5 made comments about the fact that I do things like that for him e.g. the page about bedtime, "Mummy, you do that for me too" he said. Then Mr 5 decided that he could read it all by himself It was with great pride that he took the book and began to read it. A serious hint of a proud Mummy at the same time!

The words are kept to a minimum and in fact, the illustrations are minimalistic as well. Each illustration is of the mother, child and the simple activity described by the text. The illustration is displayed on a single, light coloured background. The illustrations made us laugh as we enjoyed them. The page about the mother penguin feeding its child breakfast made us giggle as the fish was rather huge. The fish with the school bag was also one that caught our attention.

I could see that this book would provide a fantastic started in a classroom for children to create their own books as to why their Mummy is the best. Children could create their own book, with illustrations, based on this book. Of course, it wouldn't have to be just about Mummy's, the children could choose any important person. I note from the front of the book that there is also a book 'Dad's the Coolest' and this could be read at the same time to assist children think about parents/caregivers in general.

A lovely, simple book about what mums do for their children. It is a good chance for children to reflect back to their own mums and thank her for what she does for them.
