An ideal first food, our gently steam-cooked Apples taste just like homemade.
I may not be a baby, but I am not afraid to say that I LOVE eating the Wattie's for baby Apples. They really do taste really good, and for someone who likes the taste of apples but hates to eat a whole apple with skin on these are just the perfect treat for me . I first tried these after buying for my daughter when she first started eating solids, although I mostly made her baby food myself these were great to have on hand for emergencies. My daughter really loves these apples, they are probably her most preferred canned food, and the children at the daycare which I work at really love these to.
The cans are so convenient to use all you have to do is peel back the lid, so much easier than having to rummage through your kitchen drawers trying to find the can opener. The tins are safe to touch after the lid has been removed as they don't have sharp edges, which makes them safe to have around the littlies and gives you the security of knowing they aren't going to cut themselves if left alone for a minute with the tin.
These apples are super tasty and super healthy, they contain no colours, no added flavours, salt, or sugar and no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. All which is really important to me as I don't think little people should really be exposed to all of that rubbish in their food, so when the tin says apples it really is just apples. The apples are steam-cooked which gives you the taste similar to that which you would get from home cooked apples. My daughter loves the apples as is, or mixed with cereal, I like mine with roast pork!
I do not have children of my own, but I have given these tins to my nephew on many occasions, and I work in a childcare centre with children under two who are also eating these Watties baby food tins often.
Firstly, I love the convenience and easy of the rip cord on the lid. It is so much easier than getting a can openner. Unfortunately I have had the ring come off a few times leaving the lid closed, in which case a can openner is needed, but considering all of the tins I have openned, this is a very low percentage. I like that when the lid is removed, it leaves no sharp edges on the tin which may injure somebody. however I still ouldn't recommend giving the tin to a toddler just incase!
The apple flavour is quite sour compared to some of the others, but this does give me confidence that the added sugar is low, which makes it a healthy food choice for young children. I myself found it a little sour, but I have seen many a child screw their face up during the first few mouthfuls- it obviously tastes more sour when you are just starting out on solids and getting used to tastes and textures!
The portion size is great for a meal for a six to eight month old, and can allow for several feeds for a younger child who may be getting used to solids. The tin is quite good value for money if you only use it now and again for convenience, but if you are using several of these tins per day, it would be a lot cheaper to stew some apples and freeze them in small portions yourself.
I do recommend these Watties apples as being healthy for children and convenient, and I will use them occasionally for the sake of convenience when I have children, particularly because I trust the Watties brand.
For as long as I can remember Wattie's has been a leading brand in all there products including baby food. I knew of this product while I was still a child myself - in fact at times when I was growing up I would eat this (after suffering a tummy bug, or to add the final touches to family roast on a Sunday night if the meat was pork). Then I started working in early childhood and studying - yet again I was familiar with Wattie's baby and almost all of the babies I looked after would eat this at some stage. Now I am a mum myself - and yep you got it - my baby is eating Wattie's baby food some of the time - especially apples!
I love the price tag and value of these tins as well as the availability - they are always cheap and they are always wherever you shop! (Well wherever I've ever needed to shop anyway!) At the moment with my girl she is only just starting solids so these tins provide awesome value as she will get 3 or 4 meals from one tin! Its not worth me stewing up a single apple so a lot of the time we use these out of the pure 'its quick simple and easy' option. As expected once opened and put into a container the fruit inside only lasts a couple of days which can be a pain - personally I don't mind as I just freeze the leftovers in ice cubes so its all ready for next time we need it. Also great is that you can get this product in a glass jar which means you can just put what's left in the fridge without needing a container. The jars are also great to re-use for many different things!
After reading some of the reviews below I am now going to be trying this out in my baking - especially muffins, cupcakes and pikelets as I can imagine them tasting pretty good. can't believe I've gone this long without trying it actually - as it makes a great match with roast pork or pork chops. It has a really great flavour and not to sweet which is really great. The no added sugar, flavour, salt, colours, flavours and preservatives is a definite point in our house as it means we are providing the best for our health for our baby girl and ourselves. Fully recommend this product to others!!
I have used the Watties for baby Apples for two weaning babies. Apple is considered one of the best first foods for baby. Its fruit, its still fairly bland compared to many other tastes and the texture of the pulp is not too grainy. The second time through, I was doing Baby-Led Weaning, but I used this puree as a toast topping in place of jam instead. There is no added sugar, so its definitely a bit better for baby than straight jam.
This product is very versatile. Once you no longer have a little baby, the puree can be used in lots of different ways. I have used a can of this instead of buying apple sauce for a pork roast. I also have used a can of this in place of eggs in baking when I wanted to make something vegan for visiting friends. I have used it in a pancake recipe, as well as in cookies and cakes.
The apple flavour is a delicious addition to many of the things I bake, and most people can't believe that a apple puree can behave in a similar way to eggs. The flavour of this tinned apple is a bit stronger than homemade apple puree, but I don't think that's a bad thing. My daughters both rejected my homemade apple puree in favor of this, so the extra flavour was a bonus for us.
This is the most versatile product and we always have a couple of cans in the cupboard. Be it for food for my son who adores the soft apples or for my baking they always have a use!
This is the first food my son had when he turned 4 months old and he loved it. It is a pretty common first food as it is sweet and smooth so babies enjoy it when they are getting used to eating their first foods. He is now 15 months and still loves to have these apples as a treat for his pudding or on top of his porridge in the morning. It makes it easy to get fruit into him as he is not as keen on eating a fresh apple just yet.
I used these apples even before I had my son as it makes the perfect apple sauce when you are having roast pork. As it is so cheap you can get a couple of cans and you don't need to do anything to it for it to make a great apple sauce. It really works well with pork as it doesn't have any added sugar or anything so it is not too sweet when you are having it with something savoury.
I also use this when I am making apple and raisin muffins and similar baking items. In the muffins it adds the delicious apple flavour without there being chunks of apple which my daughter really likes as she doesn't like cooked apple. Because it is a puree you can stir it into a wide range of baking it even works really well in pikelets for a different flavour.
