Product reviews...
After a run-in with a shonky cobbler about 6 years back, and then discovering a brillinat brand of boots on a holiday to Aussy shortly afterwards, I really haven't had the need for the services of a Cobbler in quite a while.
However, with the chance of another 3-yearly holiday in Sydney blown out of the water this time around, and the boots having given way at the seam (damn my wide feet), it was time to seek professional assistance. I had seen this shop change ownership a few times over the years, and since the Cobbler was the current occupier, I thought I would give it a go.
Taking my boots in one hand, and my dertermination in the other, I entered the shop. It was rough... and it looked totally appropriate too! Bare wood, leather and glue, nails and grinders... it was really the right atmosphere.
The gent behind the counter was obviously very busy, which is always a good indication of his quality and skill, because let's face it, if you're any good, you've got work to do, no work means not many customers agree with your workmanship. So I showed him my overly-ventilated boots, we discussed the options, and off I went. Now, this was on a Monday, and he promised me the boots back on the Wednesday, which I thought to be a very impressive turnaround. However, my schedule meanth that I wouldn't ba back for a week, so I told him to take his time, and to please make a new set of innersoles too.
A week later I returned to collect my unfortunate footwear and was totally impressed with how good they looked! After being told by one shoe repair place that the boots were basically dead, it was stunning to see then in near-new condition again! Stitched, glue and patched to near-perfection. and all for only $25.00!
Overall, I was very highly impressed. I will be digging my old scuffs out of cold-storage and taking them back to this chap to see what other miracles he can perform. :)
