I had my insurance with AMI for 2 years, and my car was insured for ALL drivers regardless of their age or driving history. I had gone with AMI for all my insurance as it was cheap and seemed fairly clear cut.

But upon calling AMI to update change of address after we shifted house i asked if i could put the policy in joint name (mine and my partners) they said this was fine and would be no extra charge and talked me thru the process, it wasn't until they asked about driving convictions and i said he had 2 fines from driving with passengers on a restricted license from when he was a teenager that they informed me they would not insure him at all to drive my car, and then specifically excluded him from my policy.

After this he could no longer drive my car at all so i took my business elsewhere. I struggle to understand why they insure all drivers that i have not named on my policy regardless of their driving history but as soon as i name a driver with history they exclude him.

My first car was insured with AMI, only because it had been insured with them by my mother when she owned the car. Fiscal inertia, that was all it was. Then I added my Contents Cover policy, again, because I was with them, it seemed a smart move to keep all the policies in the same place.

After 8 years of reasonable service, and one hassle-free claim that took over a month to process (due to the case manager being promoted to manager of another branch) I had to make another claim, this time for a laptop, a duffle bag and a vacuum cleaner that were stolen from my car. The circumstances were suspicious, and I had an idea it was a previous flatmate who had taken them, but I had no proof. I made a critical error at claim time... I told them I suspected it was someone I knew, so of course they investigated.

Their investigator was a jerk, who seemed more interested in digging into the PREVIOUS claim, which had been processed and closed. OK, there were a few details that didn't add up, but that turned out to have been an innocent mistake made by a good friend of mine trying to help out, and he just got a few details wrong. So what about the CURRENT claim? Nothing. No work was done on it at all... in fact, the branch manager of AMI tried to get my policies revoked!

So, I cancelled all my policies with AMI, cancelled the current claim, recovered the stolen goods by my own investigative efforts, and moved over to a MUCH better Insurance provider.

I will NEVER deal with AMI again, for any matter, and I pass this fact on to anyone who mentions insurance to me. It is also interesting how many other people have recounted similar incidents to me. Word is spreading folks.

And finally, I have to laugh at just how similar their logo is to the American Meat Institute... I mean, what gives guys? AM I amused... I AM. :)

Hi, just had both our cars broken into, while parked in our locked garage while asleep less than 2m away! Both cars gloveboxes and boot gone through and took Radar detector and GPS (both in Glovebox) spare mobile phones, change etc. Just found out that will have to make claim on Car and House Insurance and pay two excesses plus will only get the depreciated value of the goods! Girl in claim department did not know what a Radar Detector was and could not answer why GPS unit which can be removed and used by hand any different to a mobile phone (I plug Mobile into charge when in car like GPS) So not happy at all. Police were good and helpful but (very impressed) - found out next door was broken into night before, wish had known beforehand... Lock your car even when at home in a locked Garage people!! Anyone for making the law tougher on crime like in Singapore (cut hand off if caught stealing - maybe not agree with so extreme but works!!!) Cheers

I have been insured with AMI for 8 years and have never made a claim until now. The company car I drive was broken into and amongst my personal items stolen was my Radar Detector and GPS unit.
I phoned AMI Thames and AMI Paeroa - both confirmed it would be covered by my contents policy. However, when I lodged the claim with AMI Hamilton it was rejected, apparently AMI view Radar Detectors and GPS units as items designed for use primarily in a car and as such should be covered by car insurance - this despite the fact both are regularly removed from the vehicle! Perhaps I lodged the claim at the wrong branch?
