iPad Space Dock product reviews

The iPad Space Dock is a low profile Aluminum stand for the iPad. It is a fashion forward, modernistic Aluminum stand that allows the iPad to position in both portrait and landscape postures. The Space Dock is finely cut from a rod of solid Aluminum and then brushed for a clean, elegant and stylish finish.

The Space Dock's inside channel is lined with velvet-like material to hold the iPad comfortably and securely while eliminating any chance of scratching its shiny new surface.

Although the Space Dock is the smallest of our iPad stands, it provides no less stability, security and comfort for the iPad. The secret to its stability is its T-shaped support arm that attaches to the back of the unit extending out 67mm.

For adjustability, the Space Dock's T-shaped support arm features three-position incline settings that allows the iPad to display in inclines of 58o, 62o and 66o of incline. The incline settings are achieved with the T-shaped support arm that securely screws into the back side of the Space Dock at three pre-drilled positions of incline.

The Space Dock's small footprint lets you set your iPad on the kitchen counter with no fear of liquid spills; on a mantel when your iPad acts as a digital photo frame or on your desktop where hands free viewing of a video or movie is the order of the day.

When I first saw this I seriously doubted it's effectiveness... there just didn't seem to be enough gripping area - a low-walled channel lined with fake velvet to prevent scratches... and that was it. However, once I actually got the loan of an iPad so I could test it 'in place' it all became clear. The channel is shaped to perfectly grip the bevelled edge of the iPad, forming a solid, firm grip without applying excessive pressure to the device - a beautiful blend of minimalist style and functionality.

The use of a shaped block of solid aluminium and a structurally-sound welded T-bar that screws into one of three staggered holes in the back allows for a very portable, stylish, light and easy to handle stand that would look equally at home on the mantel of a modern apartment, or the boardroom table. I also discovered that because of the limitations of machining that the threaded T-bar doesn't always reach the 'final turn' perfectly aligned to keep the T flat on the table. This allows you to twist the bar a little more, or less, and have the bar such that - if you are clever and careful - you can actually have a FOURTH inclined position, one that puts the iPad almost dead vertical. NOTE: Care should be taken if you attempt this option, otherwise the cost of a new iPad will be your outcome.

Overall, this stand made it easy to display the iPad as a digital photoframe, an eBook reader, or for casual usage, though I did find myself hesitant to use it too much just in case... but a big factor in that was that this iPad was a loaner and I didn't think the owner would have forgiven me if it broke. I certainly saw no signs of instability with the stand - quite the opposite - so if you want something stylish and easy to transport, then this is certainly an excellent option. Supplies are limited in NZ at this stage, but ask at your preferred supplier and they should be able to arrange supply. If not, there's always the LapWorks website.
