The Sky at Night : Apollo 11, A Night to Remember product reviews

In a pioneering speech on May 25th 1961, President John F. Kennedy pledged that America would land a man on the moon before the end of the decade.

The pledge was fulfilled when Apollo 11 manned by Neil Armstrong. Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins successfully completed its mission in July 1969. This special Sky at Night film, introduced by Sir Patrick Moore, pays tribute to this phenomenal undertaking and celebrates what has been described as the greatest adventure of all time.

Through the painstaking reassembly of historic videotape, clips and sound archive, together with original NASA footage of the mission. A Night to Remember relives the momentous epoch in which man first went to the moon.

DVD Special Features:
    •  The Sky at Night episode from 1960
    •  Astronaut Biographies

Considering that some of the footage on this disc is nearly 50 years old, it is in remarkable condition. Sure, the sound isn't the greatest, but after 50 years, it's better than I would have expected.

40 years ago, mankind took a step outwards... by placing one of it's kind on the nearest *other* ball of dirt circling our star... "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Such famous words, just 10 of them... but powerful enough to rock the planet.

Here, on one disc, we get to see it all... the lead-up, and event, and the aftermath... for many of you readers, this was before you were born! So this is a great opportunity to see a piece of history that can never be repeated, only replayed.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen the NASA enhanced footage included on the disc, but production would have been delayed, I am sure, by a month or more while that was being arranged, and it would have missed the most appropriate launching date. However, this is indeed a great piece of history, and any kid with an imagination will love watching it, and pretending to be that man, to leave his bootprint in the dust of another world, all be it a small, dry, probably-dead one only a stone's throw away from our home rock... in stellar terms that is.

Overall, well worth getting. For some, nostalgia on a disc... for other, inspiration, and for a few... a reminder of a better era full of hope and promise, that never quite got there.
