Peter Pan - Special Edition product reviews

Based on Sir James M. Barrie's 1904 play about the boy who refuses to grow up, this film begins in the London nursery of Wendy, John and Michael Darling. The three children are visited by Peter Pan, the boy who refuses to grow up. With the help of his tiny friend, the fairy Tinkerbell, Peter takes the three children on a magical flight to Never Never Land.

This enchanted island is home to Peter, Tink, the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily and her Indian tribe, and the scheming Captain Hook who is as intent on defeating Peter Pan as he is from escaping the tick-tocking crocodile that once ate the hand that Peter Pan cut off.

As a child I was enthralled by the tale of Peter Pan, and the moral tale not-so-hidden within it... and when Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman got roped into doing 'Hook' together, the magic was rekindled again... so it was with great pleasure, and some hesitant curiosity, that I plonked this in front of my son when he asked if he could watch a DVD last weekend.

My joy was abundant when I saw the rapt look on his face, the grins breaking out, and the laughter that ensued as he got right into this classic rendition of the tale. Artfully drawn in typical Disney style, there was singing and rhyming, laughter and tears, joys and fears... all wrapped up around a wonderful heart-warming tale of the boy who wouldn't grow up.

It was great to see the lost boys again, and ol' Captain Hook at his finest, glittering Tinkerbell, and the Indian tribe, the traitorous mermaids, and of course Wendy and the boys, as well as the animal cast, good old Nanna the dog, still trying to fly with flapping ears and a levitating butt-ful of fairydust and the crocodile, still ticking away there... they all bring back such wonderful childhood memories for us adults, and create new wonder and delight in our kids.

Overall, if you still don't think that 74 minutes of classic magic is worth it, take into account the 3+ hours of bonus features on Disc 2. With games and new stories, as well as interviews with Walt Disney himself, as well as some history on Peter Pan himself and how he came to be, and almost came to be too! A great addition to the kids library.
