Despite having been around in the music scene for a number of years, Ottmar Leibert is a new and enjoyable discovery for me.
The music has been described as 'new flamenco' which incorporates components of flamenco, jazz and other genres; and there is indeed much flamenco style to attract many people to listen to Liebert's style; however, if you are a flamenco purist, you may be disappointed - but how many flamenco purists will be reading this site? For pure musicianship, you cannot fault the high calibre of Liebert's guitar skills composition and arrangements. I found Liebert's arrangement of Faure's Pavane particularly pleasing. This beautiful piece was faultless, and the original composition was not lost in the arrangement for guitar - and I have many dubious renditions of this popular piece.
The exquiste and concise guitar playing held me entralled through the entire CD, and not only did it leave me wanting more, but made me fight the urge to aquire Liebert's past discography; which in time, I may do.
All in all, this music would be excellent background music for a quiet evening in with friends - even if the volume on the stereo is cranked to full! Do enjoy this marvellous musician and wonderful music.
