When this chocolate mud cake mix arrived I was sick with a nasty cold so was feeling pretty miserable. Chocolate mud cake was exactly what I felt like but I just didn't know if I had the energy to follow instructions to make said cake. However with two kids it was pretty hard not to make the cake without starting the next world war. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.

Between the two kids they managed to do most of the work themselves the recipe was so easy to follow and there were no special ingredients or equipment needed, with a bit of supervision the kids could do it all themselves. The hardest part was waiting for the cake to cook!! The smells coming from the oven while this was cooking were so so good and all our tummies were rumbling!!

We loved the look of the serving suggestion on the box but with limited ingredients in the house we had to improvise so we gave it a quick dusting of icing sugar and my 4 year old decided he wanted to put mandarin segments on the top. Now I am being completely honest when I say this is the best bake at home chocolate cake I have ever tasted. Some I have tried do not live up to the title of mudcake but this definitely did it was rich and moist just like a mud cake should be.

We have been trying a few different gluten free products and have been impressed and this was definitely a product that I would buy again for the family as it is easy to make and tastes so goood!!

I was so excited that this cake mix arrived in time for mother's day as it meant we could all join in on some cake for pudding. It was nice to try out a brand we have not heard of before especially being gluten free as there is not a lot out on the market and other gluten free cake mixes we have tried have been over priced and well pretty gross to put it lightly.

The packaging of this product was eye catching and simple. The ingredients and instructions were minimal and easy to follow simple enough for my 6 year old to do this without much help. I have to say this was the easiest cake mix we have made and it mixed together perfectly without having to get the great big mixer out of the pantry, which meant my two boys could help.

The cake cooks evenly and quickly and looks like any other mud cake you would buy from a store and smelt amazing! We served ours without any icing but a few of us had ice cream as a side to the cake. You wouldn't know that this was gluten free at all, it was full of flavour and very moist. We would definitely buy this product again and enjoy it at our next celebration, great work Farmers Mill we will keep a eye out in store for more of your products to try in the future.

I love when we get accepted to review baking products, especially when it is ones we have never tried or even heard of. In this case, I had not even heard of Farmers Mill. I am always dubious about trying gluten free products, and so appreciate that suppliers do send them to Kr for us to try. As GF items are always so much more pricier than standard food, its so hard deciding which ones to give a go and which ones not to go near.

Our past experiences with GF cakes etc have not been a good one. Usually it is hard to find a product that is not to dry, to dense, or in many cases tastes a lot like cardboard. Obviously as this is a cake mix, there is the probability that the end product may be to dry, or over/under cooked etc, and that a lot comes down to the person baking it, in this case that was my teenage son. Hes a whizz in the kitchen, so I had faith that he would indeed do a wonderful job.

I have to say that he produced a mudcake that looks exactly like the mudcakes sold at our local New World bakery. I was very impressed. The cake was a perfect mudcake texture, and looked rich and with just the right density. Cutting into it, and it was most definitely not dry or powdery like some GF stuff, and as an added bonus...it tastes good...really good! and if youre not GF then we highly recommend drizzling it with salted caramel, or butterscotch sauce! Miss 9 had her piece in a bowl and poured her glass of milk over it. She said it was so so good! This is huge, because shes not a big sweets eater.

Instructions were simple and easy to follow, even for a teenage lad lol, and the box and packaging easy to open. From box to plate in under an hour! Definitely worth while having in the pantry for when unexpected guests pop in for a cuppa or dessert, and highly recommended for anyone who is GF and looking for good quality, easy to use, tasty baking products.

I was very excited to make this for my Master Four as he often misses out on cakes and other treats. I am not the best cake baker so boxed ones such as these are a common feature in our pantry! Gluten Free ones now can be too!

I was pleasantly surprised my the straight forward instructions! This cake was ready in just five simple steps! My kind of baking! This mix does not require a lot of extra ingredients wither, this was also a great factor for me. All you need is the mix, canola oil, water and two eggs. So easy and means there is quite literally no reason for anyone to miss out or not be able to do this! The amount of ingredients and small amount of instructions also means not many dishes so if you are anything like me this would be a great cake mix to try!

I quite often wonder if gluten free products are just as tasty as the gluten alternative and in this case the moisture and density of the mud cake was very good and it tasted just as good as "normal" mud cake! Instead of icing the cake I dusted it with icing sugar and this was enough. Most importantly Master Four LOVED his very own special cake!

With four coeliacs in the family we have tried most gluten free cake mixes on the market so I was really pleased to be chosen to try this gluten free mud cake.

I usually make my cakes from scratch, as it works out much cheaper and nicer, but I usually have a couple of boxes of mix on hand for times when I need to whip something up at short notice for going out etc so its great to discover new products. The first thing that I liked about this product is that the ingredients list was really simple. There wasn't much extra in the mix that I wouldn't use myself. Its always a little bit of a shock to see sugar as the first ingredient but the reality is if you are buying a box cake mix you probably aren't wanting a healthy nutritious cake simply something quick, easy and yummy. In which case this box mix hits the spot, The steps are so easy. Turn on the oven, get a bowl, add the mix then add eggs and oil and mix, pour into the tin and into the oven. Wash up the bowl and spoon whilst the cake bakes and sit down with a cuppa and a book.

Hey presto a very perfect cake. I gave this to the family for a day out as I had other plans (saving a piece for myself) and it got rave reviews. The kids really enjoyed it and have asked me to make it again. Interestingly enough they loved it without any icing. It tasted very brownie like and moist and for a cake that uses oil not butter I found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would.

Compared to other gluten free cake mixes this definitely rates highly and cost wise I would consider this a fair amount to pay. I will definitely buy this product again and can definitely recommend it.

I have to admit I was quite excited about this mix, as I am a BIG chocolate fan, and in terms of chocolate cakes, I have always preferred the more moist, fudge-like ones, mudcakes being one major example. The big problem I have had with making cakes, however, is that I always end up leaving them in the oven too long, and they go dry, and I had hoped that maybe baking a cake that was more moist than most others would mean it would turn out better, but it turns out that one can make that same mistake with this particular cake.

The recipe on the back of the box was good, it was simple, constrained to 5 instructions, and I like how it was different from most other recipes in that it actually has "preheat the oven to 'this' temperature" as the FIRST instruction, which is what I have always seen as the more logical way of doing things. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. Smile Icon The rest of the box artwork was well laid out, it was designed in a way that makes it very easy to find any particular piece of desired information that much easier.

I like that this cake mix is gluten-free, even though I'm not gluten intolerant, I still think that having a substitute for gluten-including foods is great, it helps to suit the needs of those who require the change, or those who are paranoid about their health! LOL Icon What really get me hesitant about gluten-free foods, however, is the question of whether or not it will taste as good or better than its regular counterpart. What I mean by that is, will a gluten-free mudcake taste as good as, or better than, a regular mudcake?

With this cake, I found that the answer was yes, it does taste as good, but it would have tasted better if I hadn't let it go dry. This mix didn't require a lot of ingredients, it only required some canola oil, water, 2 eggs, and the packet of dry mix, and that's it! The instructions were equally simple, I think that this would be a very good thing for people with little-to-no baking experience to try, as it may be "the lazy option", but for beginners the lazy option is a start at least.

I think the big reason I screwed up the cake despite following this recipe exactly is that our oven is quite buggered up, it ends up being hotter than you think it is, so I would say that the time stated in the recipe is good as a reference, but I would honestly suggest simply probing the cake with a knife every once in a while to see if there is still a bit of unbaked batter in the middle, and if there isn't too much coming off on the knife, then just bring it out of the oven and let the bake finish baking itself, even if that does sound weird. LOL Icon

Overall, I would say that if I hadn't let it go dry, which then resulted in the cake being as crumbly and brittle as old mortar, then it would have turned out brilliantly. I was pleased with how simple using this mix turned out to be, and I would be happy to track down another box and try again, as the flavour of the cake was still quite nice, and even a bit spicy for some reason O_o I would highly recommend this mix to any beginner bakers out there, or anyone who isn't a beginner but is craving something sweet an is too 'naffed to bake one from scratch; as was the case when I got around to using this! LOL Icon Enjoy!

So I got my bake on this morning after my son left for school, which is not something I do often as I find baking takes to long and I don't have the time. This Gluten free chocolate mudcake was super easy to make and took no time at all. I thought it was rather quick and easy and also I enjoyed making the cake.

I found I used hardly any utensils as well, one bowl, a measuring cup, a wooden spoon and the cake tin, which is great as no big mess to clean up afterwards. I found the mixture didn't taste very chocolately when I tried it from the spoon but thats ok as it was still nice. I pre heated the oven and in went the cake.

I cooked the cake for 45mins of 160 fan bake. I prefer to have my cakes moist and it recommended 45-50 mins so I went with the 45 minutes. I found the cake was cooked perfectly and any more would have over cooked it a little, to my liking anyways. I let the cake cool down before I cut into it.

I cut a slice of cake and I have to say I loved the texture, not as moist as I would have liked it, but the inside was nice and soft and I liked the crusted edge around the cake from the base and top of it. I like the different combinations between the two textures. I also thought the flavour was great and for a packet cake it tasted all good.

One recomendation I would suggest is that it came with a icing pack as well within the box, as everyone loves chocolate icing on a mudcake and if your doing the cheat way and making a packet cake I'm sure you don't want to make a icing. I didn't make a icing, I just had it on its on, but a chocolate icing would just make it that much better.

i think for the price its good, as being gluten free, it would cost you more than that to get the ingredients to buy it yourself or even at a cafe you would pay the same price for just one slice of gluten free mudcake. Overall a nice sweet and easy mudcake with flavour and saves a lot of time baking.

Thanks to the awesome team at KIWIreviews I was selected to review this gluten free Chocolate Mudcake by Farmers Mill. I've been baking since I was knee high to a grasshopper and have a great sweet tooth. Thankfully I don't have a gluten allergy however I do enjoy trying gluten free options - and chocolate cake!

On my first look over of the product I was impressed by the ingredients - Alkalised cocoa powder gives a different flavour that is perfect for mudcake, the sugar content is quite high but that is to be expected. Ingredients required are 2 eggs, 1/2 a cup of water, and 1/2 a cup of Canola oil. Unfortunately we don't typically have canola oil in the pantry - so we had to do a supermarket run, which was quite easy to achieve. Second issue - I only have 20cm and 23cm cake tins, so I decided to opt for making cupcakes.

After lining my tray and preheating the oven to the specified 175 degrees, I mixed the oil, water, eggs and mudcake mix together. The mixture was easy to blend with a wooden spoon and without the use of an electric mixer, and the instructions are easy to follow. As I was using a cupcake tin, I had to adjust the time - the cupcakes took between 30 - 35 minutes to cook through and were tested with a skewer at 25, 30 and 35 minutes.

The end result: I couldn't wait until they cooled down, oh no. The mudcake cupcakes were the perfect mudcake texture without being too dense, had a slightly crisp crust without being overdone, and I found were sweet enough without icing. The mudcake cupcakes didn't taste overly different to a mudcake made with gluten, and are a great alternative.

Overall the directions were easy to follow, the packaging well presented, and the end product is delicious and not too dense.

I am grateful that no one in my household has food allergies so I usually don't have to worry about it but I have on occasion had guests whose needs meant I had to careful plan every item of food I provided. A few years ago now my daughter had a young girl at her party that was both dairy and gluten free. I spent hours scouring the internet for a suitable cake recipe that didn't use obscure ingredients and the children would eat. The resulting chocolate mud cake had a whole block of dark chocolate and was too rich for everyone.

When I saw Farmers Mill had a gluten-free chocolate mud cake mix I wished I had seen this when I needed that allergy friendly cake, but I was also skeptical. Cake mixes are hit and miss and gluten free baking is often dry, tasteless expensive. I was wrong on all accounts this mudcake was a huge hit with everyone that ate it and despite my best intentions didn't last 24 hours.

The instructions were very easy to follow just add oil, water and eggs, mix and bake. There was also the option of using an egg replacement if needed. Although it isn't stated on the box the mix is also vegan so would cater for dairy allergies too. Farmers Mill had also commented on Facebook that the mix is great for cupcakes. I chose not to try this as I didn't know how long to bake the cupcakes and didn't want to chance a bad review due to my cooking error. This would be a handy thing to add to the box.

Instead I cooked it in a ring tin and checked it with a skewer when the minimum time (45 minutes) was up. It wasn't quite ready and needed the extra 5 minutes. Throughout the baking the children were asking me if the cake was ready. There was great excitement when I removed it from the oven only to be turned to sighs when I told them it had to cool and be iced.

I decided to finish the cooled cake off by pouring melted chocolate over it. The result was a very delicious cake that everyone (big and small) loved. I was very pleased to find out it only cost $5.25 to buy the box. This is exceptional value for a gluten free cake mix and about the same price as a regular cake mix. I have already recommended this to people I know that have gluten free members in their family. If I need to make another gluten free cake I will be buying this.

I haven't had much experience with gluten free products, especially with baked gluten free items, however a couple of months ago I came across a chocolate brownie that was gluten free and was pleasantly surprised with how good it actually was (to be honest if I hadn't read the packet I wouldn't have known it was a gluten free product). When I saw the Farmer Mills Homebake Gluten-Free Chocolate Mudcake come available for review I thought it may be well worth trying in the hopes it would be similar tasting to the previous gluten free product I had tried, I was happy to receive this as part of my review package, especially as it ended up exceeding my expectations above and beyond.

As I work in a childcare centre I know of quite a few children who are unable to eat gluten, which means it can be hard when trying to find foods for them to eat and which they will enjoy. Being the school holidays I decided to take this packet mix along to work with me so that I could get the children to help me make it, and also so the gluten free children could enjoy a special treat. The instructions on the back of the box were very easy to follow, and only required 3 additional ingredients water, oil and 2 eggs. All you have to do is place these ingredients into a bowl along with the dry packet mix and mix them altogether until well combined. Place the mixture into a cake tin and cook for about 35 minutes. The cake was cooked perfectly after this amount of time and so out of the oven it came to cool.

This cake mix does not come with a icing sachet like many cake mixes do, which I was a little disappointed with especially as the front of the box shows the final product covered in either chocolate or icing. None the less when the cake was cooled the children and I made our own icing from icing sugar, water, vanilla essence and superchoc powder by Matakana Super Foods (we seemed to have run out of cocoa). The children spread the icing over the cake and decorated it with sprinkles and chcocolate chips. All was looking promising however as I went to transfer the cake from cooling rack to plate it sadly split in half due to the delicate texture of the cake.

The cake really did resemble that of a store brought mud cake, similar in colour, density and also flavour, it wasn't as crumbly as some mud cakes that I've tried before, however this is a good thing. The cake consisted of a rich chocolaty taste that wasn't to sweet, and it had a nice crisp crumb to the outside of it with a moist, gooey middle. I could quite happily eat this cake myself as it didn't have a gluten free taste or feel to it at all, some of my fellow colleagues tried this cake also and said they had no idea that it was gluten free, as for the children they absolutely loved it and devoured it in no time! When asked what part of the cake they liked best they suprisingly said the part like a brownie (meaning the cake not the icing, which says a lot as they are usually ones who tend to eat the icing off the cake and not much else).

I personally think this cake is a winner and a great option for those who are gluten free, would make a great special occasion cake as it is easy to decorate. The steps are easy to follow and it only takes minutes to prepare, older children could do this unsupervised I'm sure. The price is well worth paying and I will definitely be recommending this brand to others.
