Epicurean Mulling Spices product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsUsing these spices you can make hot drinks, cold drinks, alcoholic or non alcoholic quaffs. Create drinks for all times of day, for all ages, tastes and seasons. Use the spiced juices for sauces, marinades, poaching liquids, baking and deserts.

Our mulled wine recipes are light alcoholic drinks (half spiced juice and half wine) and so are perfect for afternoon receptions and weddings... and Christmas Day! A tip is to have the spiced juice perfectly warming in a crock pot with a carafe of red wine next to it ready for guests to instantly make their own drink. This is great drink for designated drivers as it is a special/guilty drink - without the guilt.

A lucky (and smart) person will have a litre or two of spiced apple juice on hand in the refrigerator ready for any emergency. Unexpected guests can be offered hot mulled juice or mulled wine or that corned beef on special can be put in the slow cooker with the spiced juice for an exceptional night's dinner (after removing the meat cook the potatoes, onions and cabbage in the remaining juice). You know, juice is an acid as well as a sweet so it can move easily from a drink to a marinade or a cooking liquid.

After being fortunate enough to sample the finished product at a recent Craft Fair, I knew this was going to be great little spice mix... What I didn't know was just how the rest of the family would react. This was going to prove interesting.

I made up 3 litres of Mulled Apple Juice in line with the recipe on the back of the pack, and I tell you, it was like the pure essence of 'classic apple pie like Mum used to make' in a liquid form... no, NOT like the mushy remains after a pie is run through a blender, I mean imagine a golden glass that tastes just like apple pie smells and tastes... delightful!

Consumed warm, it is a wonderful Winter night's sipper... especially if you mix in a dash of white rum or a dram of brandy... cold, it can be poured over a crushed mix of frozen berries and ice, with a dash of tropical juice to add some complex flavours in there. I also used it to 'plump up' some sultanas for a dish of Curried Sausages, and the added sweetness and flavour complexities really were noticeable.

Overall, this was a wonderful little spice mix, and one I think I will have to look at keeping in the larder. My only regret is that the amount in the pack - 28g - will only do about 6 litres of juice - sure that sounds like a lot, but by the time you have marinaded the pork chops for the BBQ, made up a jug of Summer Cooler to drink, and whipped up a fruit crumble for dessert... that's it. You're out of the good stuff. I guess it's just good planning that this mix can be bought in packs up to 100gm - saving you about $7.50, gram for gram, over the small packet per-gram price. Brilliant! Be sure to check their website and raid the recipe section too!
