I have been travelling past this shop for ages, when it was called "Kinton Takeaways" and have been forced on a number of unfortunate occasions to TRY and buy food from them. Now, those owners are GONE! And in their place are a lovely couple who, it turns out, were the original owners of Fishworld on College Street (also reviewed on this site) and the creators of the Frumpy Burger and T-Rex Burger, two yummy burgers indeed.

So, after chatting to the owner, we agreed it was time to pull the Kinton Takeaways review (since that business no longer operates) and put up a review for the new-look store.

Gone are the grungy spacies machines, gone is the smelly, leaky drinks fridge (to be replaced with a new one in the near future), gone is the quarter-inch thick grease on the walls and floor. In their place you will now find some comfy chairs, potplants, delightful curtains that give a home-feel, and a generally nicer environment. Even though the counter is exactly the same, it is now so clean it looks like it had been replaced too!

Also gone, however, is the chinese food. So sorry, no more fried rice. Just good, hearty Kiwi tucker here now mate.

After a great chat with these good folks, I finally decided what I wanted, and ordered a Steak Burger with extra cheese, and a piece of crumbed fish. Not much to base a review on, but I knoew what their burgers were like. And I wasn't disappointed.

I was presented with a burger containing enough cheese to bankroll and dairy farm, a meat pattie AND a slab of steak (not a thin slice, this was a lump!), REAL salad of lettuce leaves, tomatoe and grated cheese, with mayo and BBQ sauce. Which was the downfall of the burger. Even at the best of times I am not a fan of BBQ sauce... too smokey in flavour. This BBQ sauce tasted almost charcoaled. Now don't misunderstand me, the burger was top notch, but had I known it would have BBQ sauce, I would have asked they leave it off, so that I could have really enjoyed an otherwise wonderfully filling burger.

As for the crumbed fish, it was cooked to perfection. It was at that great stage where it just flaked apart in my hands, allowing me to dip it in a little sauce of my own making (a little pepper, a touch of cajun spices, a squirt of lemon juice and a pinch of salt) in tasty bite-size morsels. The crumbing was also top-notch, as many places batter the fish first. Not so here... if there was any batter, is was so thin and light I couldn't taste it.

Overall, I will be trying this place again, to taste a broader range of their menu, but if this is their usual standard, it should be a good feed. I have heard stories of their chips, which I think I shall have to check out for myself before I comment further.
