Frostheart product reviews

Way out in the furthest part of the known world, a tiny stronghold exists all on its own, cut off from the rest of human-kin by monsters that lurk beneath the Snow Sea.

There, a little boy called Ash waits for the return of his parents, singing a forbidden lullaby to remind him of them... and doing his best to avoid his very, VERY grumpy yeti guardian, Tobu.

But life is about to get a whole lot more crazy-adventurous for Ash. When a brave rescue attempt reveals he has amazing magical powers, he's whisked aboard the Frostheart, a sleigh packed full of daring explorers who could use his help. But can they help him find his family . . . ?

Frostheart is described on the back of the copy that I read as part Frozen (his powers require singing), part Nevermoor (lots of adventure and a whole new world to explore) and part How to Train Your Dragon (unusual creatures that our hero, Ash, may be able to communicate with, maybe). What first drew me to this book was the cover, which unfortunately is not the one pictured above and doesn't appear to be final cover, which is a shame as I loved it and thought it quite gorgeous as well as alluding to the creatures hidden under the snow and ice. The book is set in a world besieged by snow and ice, sun stones create power and humans aren't the only intelligent creatures (there are yetis and various other intelligent creatures).

The book starts off a little slow but works hard to have us feel sorry for young Ash, who desires to sing in a stronghold where music is forbidden and no one wants to care for him (possible orphan). It is discovered that his singing has the possibility to fight, tame or quell the creatures that live under the snow and attack anything that moves on the snow and ice. I liked the range of characters, each was unique and whilst they fit the usual tropes it was fine. The villain was easy to spot, the moment they were introduced I knew, so nothing they did surprised me but it didn't put me off the book. I found myself staying up later than I should have, in order to finish the book and it left it wide open for more adventures for Ash on the Frostheart, afterall not all questions have been answered.
