Crazy Rich Asians product reviews

Crazy Rich Asians follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend's wedding in Singapore.

Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick's family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country's wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors.

Being on Nick's arm puts a target on Rachel's back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick's own disapproving mother (Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can't buy love, it can definitely complicate things.

I don't usually watch romantic movies, I usually find them too full of fluff or sex or the both, but the trailers for this film had me interested, especially seeing as whilst it was in english, it was an asian run film, from the cast to the director and on. The plot itself isn't anything new, she finds out he's rich, everyone from his side of life disapproves, she decides to stand up for herself and eventually, usually, love prevails. Very little time is spent in America before we fly first class to Singapore, where we get to see the much, much, much finer side of life, with the film having no qualms about showing us just how some of the filthy rich behave.

From the outset, I knew how the film would go and what I could expect from the ending, but knowing what was coming didn't stop me from being able to enjoy it. Whilst we do focus on the rich society, there are little nods to the asian culture itself, with the street market near the beginning, the dumplings being made and so on. I loved that there are moments where the characters speak in chinese (don't worry, there are subtitles), which made it feel more authentic and really helped make it its own. Awkwafina was wonderful in her role as bestie to Rachel and Yeoh was great as Nick's mother (I haven't seen her in any role other than one involving kicking physical butt, so wasn't sure what to expect, but I do really like her).

In the end, I enjoyed this film far more than I thought that I would and will be watching it again, I'm sure.
