Initial Quest product reviews

Given four intial letters, can you think of a fish, a sandwich filling, a boy's name and a board game, one beginning with each initial letter? How hard can it be...

It sounds simple, but with time rapidly running out and everyone else doing the same thing, can you come up with 16 items that no-one else has written down?

Not quite so simple now is it?

With over 120 categories you could pick the 4 from, there is fun for hours for 2 or more players. Comes complete with 6 pencils, scorepads, sand-timer, recordpads (for jotting down your answers) and of course, the rulebook, this tidy little 20cm square box has all you need... except your skill.

This is one of the most fun games I have played in a long time, it is so simple to play and so easy to understand. But the thing that I enjoyed about it the most was that you do know the words to use, but if the others players use the same words you don't get any points, so every one comes up with the strangest things and it is so funny to compare answers at the end of a game. The games are really short and it does not take long to set up, it makes for a good conversation and it really tells you just how sick your mates are. Really good fun! Might even work as a drinking game?

Very interesting game, yet does have a feeling of similarity to another game you can't quite put your finger on. As the scribble suggests, you can play this game for hours and hours and if you finally master all the category/letter combinations. You can also add your own categories, a perfect game to take away with you on a holiday.

I've always had a fancy for words... something to do with my chosen bedtime reading as a teenager... my favourite books contained no skin, or pictures for that matter, but they did contain a lot of alien worlds, starships, and titles that included words like "encyclopedia" and "technical"...

Now, even with that storehouse of trivia and info-fluff stuck in my head, I found this game to be quite a challenge. When the timer is dropping sand, your mind seems to draw far more blanks than is acceptable. LOL Icon

Speaking of the timer, I feel that some kind of audio timer, an electronic bleeper or something akin to that would be far more useful, since it can be difficult to keep an eye on the timer and your mind on the task of trying to work out as many of the 16 possible answers as you can...

Overall, it was quite a fun game to play, and had us laughing and butting heads in a good natured way... after all, since there are no right or wrong answers, only those accepted and those debated... you can inject much humour into the game by throwing in some strange answers. And I *STILL* dare anyone to tell me that "Orthodontist" is a wrong answer for "Things found in a church, beginning with the letter O" LOL Icon

After a brief look at the rules, I realised I had played this game before, or one remarkably like it, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The categories are hugely varied and it would take many rounds, I think, before you repeated any of the cards. The frustrating part is having your brain freeze up when you are trying to think of a word to go with your category and then having the answer come to you when time has run out.

The inclusion of scoring pads and individual player sheets makes playing easier. Although, maybe a few spares of each would be a bonus, if you don't wanna have to break up the one and only copy of each pad that comes in each box. If you like mind stretching, thought provoking games I would suggest getting this game, either as a gift or for someone special.

In all, a good fast-paced game for all the family.
