Whacker McCracker's Cafe product reviews

Whacker McCracker's mid-life crisis is a doozy - he's been dreaming of the simple life, escaping the big smoke to run a quiet little cafe on Waiheke Island He's finally free of his five piranha-snapping, Pauanui-loving ex-wives, his kids are off on the big OEs
and he's sold his stake in the agency. No more stress, no more hassles... what could possibly go wrong?

Quite a lot, as it happens. For starters, Whacker can't even make a decent piece of toast. But when he finds out that the Glorious Ocean View Cafe in Oneroa is for sale, he doesn't muck around, and Whacker McCracker's Cafe is soon open for business. Whacker's ingenious marketing ideas certainly make the cafe front-page news. And then the fun really begins...

Tony Ward, author and photographer, lives on Waiheke Island but has yet to start a cafe of his own.

I have not been a great follower of New Zealand authors, so I was somewhat unsure of how to feel about this book. That was changed as soon as I started reading. The narrative style of writing and the ingenious use of good ol' Kiwi humour was well mixed. I found myself being swept away in the trials and tribulations of Whacker (his parents had a wicked sense of humour) McCracker and his new-found friends as they try to set up Waiheke Islands' newest eatery.

I would gladly buy more copies of this book as gifts, if I had the money, and can recommend it to anyone who likes a good laugh - although some of the humour may be slightly more appropriate for ages 11 & up.

Product reviews for listing 7242: Napoleon's Willow -  Written by Joan Norlev taylor

Product image for Napoleon's WillowBased on real events and people from our colonial past, this impeccably-researched and dramatic adult fiction follows the lives of the main characters as they become entwined together in an intense story of adventure, love and loss. This novel explores not only an important chapter in New Zealand's history, but also the deep and sanguine forces that drove the early settlers and pioneers to leave safe and familiar Europe to etch new lives for themselves in the far-away, unknown and often-treacherous corners of the world.
