Dragon Knight #2: Rats! product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsSometimes being half boy, half dragon gets really messy.

Merek and his family are shape-shifting dragons, living in a human world. It is Mereks heartfelt desire to become a knight and when he gets chosen for Knight School, he thinks all his dreams have come true. But trying to keep his dragon identity secret - in an occupation that routinely sets out to vanquish dragons - proves a real test for the young trainee knight.

Merek thinks two-headed flame-shooting dragons are trouble enough, but will he survive an army of ravenous rats?

An outrageous and revoltingly funny medieval adventure series for 6+

I had the clever idea of reading this book to the kids today as it was wet and windy. The boys thought it was funny and discussed what they would change into if they had the ability to shape shift. I had only read a few lines and Mr 7 burst into song as the words were very similar to one of the scouting songs he learnt recently.

The kids drifted away slowly as they liked the story but not the parts that mentioned rats or poo. I liked how the "facts" were presented, very easy to read and explain to the kids. I had to stop reading a few times so the kids could take a look at the pictures and discuss what they could see. I had to smile at some of the word play but mostly at the kids reactions to what Merek was experiencing and the mention of poo or farts had the boys in fits of laughter holding their noses.

Mr 7 realised that there are other titles in the series and has asked me to try and find the other books so we can read them. I think it would be interesting to see what else can happen to a shape shifting dragon.

Having read a few of the Dinosaur Rescue books and found them just a tad icky for my taste I was interested to see what this new series Dragon Knight would be like.
The illustrations are true to form in black and white. They are as to be expected very humorous and Miss Four, Miss Seven and I probably spent as much time looking at the illustration's as we did reading the story. They both seemed to find the illustrations very funny and we had a lot of laughs reading this.

The story is a little different with Merek and his family being shape shifters who can change into anything. This is set in medieval times and the author has clearly done some research to ensure that aspects of his story are historically accurate. We loved the extreme dungeon makeover and the top 5 most awesome weapons. Throughout the story are lots of interesting fact boxes which the girls enjoyed reading and learning different facts.

The actual story is funny and y girls enjoyed it though I imagine boys will love it even more. I can definitely recommend this as a great book for children aged 6 years plus who enjoy a good adventure involving dragons and knights! I look forward to reading the first book in this series next.
