When I saw that this book was up for review and subsequently applied, I was really hoping that I would be lucky enough to get picked. Therefore I was totally excited when this came in the mail and immediately sat down to read this with my daughter who's 20months old. While some people reading this review might think that 20months is quite young to be sharing a book like this with its a normal occurrence in our household. Being an Early Childhood Teacher who loves books I have always made sure my daughter is exposed to lots of good books and have read to her from birth. Subsequently she already "reads" book well above what some children would at her age and can maintain focus/interest in books for long periods of time.

The first thing I loved about this book was that there was a gorgeous picture of a giraffe on the front, for whatever reasons giraffes have been the animal of choice when it comes to things for my daughter (since birth) so it seemed a natural choice for me. I also knew my daughter would love it for the same reason, that its something familiar and also that she loves all animals. I also liked that the colours used were pastel in colour and appeared to match well while still standing out. As I continued to read the book I found this rang true for each and every page within the book. In fact the illustrations are simply gorgeous. I like that there are other "things" going on in the pictures and found myself re-reading this book several times often without reading the printed words but instead "reading" the illustrations/pictures. My daughter especially loved this and was able to point out several different things in each picture. The illustrator and author have very cleverly matched the colour of some of the text to the characters and theme of each page which I thought was a nice touch.

The author of this book has done a great job of creating a simple story that captures your heart and brings home the importance of relationships and all the reasons why mummy's are so special. Sometimes if we have been out an about all day or busy we wont read a lot throughout the day but reading stories before bed is something we always do in our house no matter what so I therefore loved that this booked ends with "My mummy tucks me in. She tells stories just right. We make secret wishes. She kisses me goodnight".

I also took this book to work with me and read it at mat time to our 2-5year old group of children every day for a week. Each day there is anywhere between 30 to 50 children in that group at one time so a very big audience to keep happy but I was impressed that this book did exactly that. It was on day two that I no longer needed to say the line "Mummy your special to me" as the children knew when it was coming and I would hear the chorus of them all saying it as I turned the page. It was awesome that they were able to join in with the story telling and I know plenty of the children who have been talking about this book at home with their parents. Definitely a book I recommend to everyone - it caters for a wide age range and is a simply gorgeous book (dad's take note, this is definitely one book that you will want to buy your child and their mum!) 'Mummy You're Special to Me" has come out at a perfect time, with Mother's Day coming up. It would be a lovely gift for a child to give to a Mother. I know that my heart melted when I heard my son read the book to me while emphasising the part about how special I am. As he read it, I thought that it could be really special for another adult to assist the child to record themselves reading the story and make that part of a present to their mother. They could even make up their own story about why Mum is special to them and record that. I am absolutely sure that tears of joy and pride would follow either of these ideas.

The things that makes Mum so special in the book are things that any mum can do for their child without monetary cost. They are all about the TIME that a mum can spend with her child. These are the sort of memories I want my children to have of the things I do with them. The book is a good reminder of the fact that all kids really want is a parent's time.

The illustrations in the book are gorgeous and use a wide range of colours through the pages in the book. All the colours are calming and relaxing. It is very smart and effective how some of the words on each page are in a different colour. The colour has been matched to a main colour from that page. It ties the visual effect of the text and the illustrations together nicely.

Mr 5 started school at the beginning of the year and is loving reading. I read this book to him and his three year old sister a couple of times and they both loved it. They enjoyed the repetition of the sentence "Mum, you're special to me" in the book and they also liked using the phrase around the house after reading the book. Very quickly, Mr 5 decided that he could read it all by himself and sat beside me and took out the book and started to read it. With a little help from me, he managed to read the entire book.

Mr 5 noticed that the giraffe is on all of the pages throughout the book. It is always fun to have something like that to get children to really look at the illustrations. I was too busy reading the book to noticed, but Mr 5 was listening attentively and also 'reading' the illustrations as we went. He kept saying "Mummy, you are special to me." He thought it was very important that I could hear him and said it over and over.

I think that this is a great book for a mother and child to share together. Simply beautiful.
