Goddess product reviews

When young mum Elspeth Dickens (Kelly), mother of naughty twin boys, installs a webcam in her kitchen, her funny sink-songs make her a cyber-sensation. While her husband James (Keating) is off saving the world's whales, Elspeth is offered the chance of a lifetime. But when forced to choose between fame and family, the newly anointed internet goddess almost loses it all.

I was feeling a bit down when I put this in the DVD player. I've been working some long hours and that makes for very little time to play. So with my husband out and a need for a break, I put this on. I was a bit unsure of the movie on first glance, but the fact that Magda Szubanski is in it peaked my interest. I don't think I have ever seen her in a bad movie and she always brings something pretty special to any work I have seen of hers.

This film is about a frazzled mum of twin boys, left to cope all by herself in a place that she doesn't feel she belongs in. The other mums don't welcome her into the fold, which is something I think most mothers have felt - being an outsider and trying to break into a new group of people. Mothers all have different parenting techniques and that can lead to clashes, friendly or otherwise.

Szubanski is really neat in this. She plays a strong, level headed business woman. She is flawed but likeable and in her own words "fabulous". I loved all her scenes and especially her musical number.

Keating plays the eco-warrior husband, always away and never in contact. I found his character highly unlikeable. I'm not sure if I was meant to, but if so then he did a good job because I wanted to throw something at the TV at several points. As Elspeth's star begins to rise, and she needs him home more his whole attitude just grated on me. While the ending worked and was fine, there was another way it could have gone which would have been just as satisfying and the feminist in me wouldn't have had as many issues with it.

Aside from that, the songs are great. Lots of fun, really catchy and many of the situations were totally relatable. It was funny and romantic and a great distraction. I would watch this again, maybe with a bottle of wine and a group of friends.
