Jones Bar product reviews

Located on Rangitikei Street, next to the BNZ Bank and opposite the Westside Building (currently under conversion to Apartment accommodation) we are right in the heart of the city.

The cosy atmosphere is enhanced by live bands playing regularly, and a slots casino discreetly tucked away in one corner.

Come and see us, we'd love to see you!

I can remember this place from way back, when it was The Fox 'n' Hound. Since those glory days, it has been revamped any number of times as people have tried to make a go of this slightly awkward location. With little-to-no parking nearby (unless you count The Warehouse across the road) and a narrow, 'cosy' interior, this had to be a challenge.

The current owners have removed the old dancefloor area and converted it to a casino (a sad, but seemingly required addition to many good nightspots, in order to attract enough income to stay open) which has reduced the available 'bar' space to a narrow isle which widens out to the main venue. This is where you will locate the bar (to the left, backing onto the casino cubby) and the stage (to the far right corner). Also tucked into this somewhat enclosed space is a pool-table.

I popped in with a friend to check out the band (also reviewed on this site) and was pleasantly surprised by just how well it all slotted together to leave enough room for a good crowd and some dance space. Spacial origami at work, very 'Doctor Who's Tardis' in nature.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and I even got to chat to the Manager/Owner (not sure which, we didn't get onto that topic) and was impressed by his informative and friendly attitude. He was very happy tiinform me of the upcoming live acts booked, and was even forthright enough to let me know when the 'quiet' patches in the entertainment schedule would be, allowing me to plan my nocturnal visits without facing disappointment when no bands were playing.

Overall, I was quite impressed, and intend to revisit the place as often as my mood, money and time will allow.
