My 3 children and I are huge fans of Craig Smith's books, by far our favourite series has to be the Wonky Donkey series. We have managed to build up our collection and have each book, while browsing the KIWIreviews website I noticed that there was a new book in the series which we had not read yet, and I knew my children would love to add it to our bookcase. I requested a copy and the children were thrilled when they received it, and of course we had to read it instantly.

This story is called "Wonky Donkey's Big Surprise" the cover has Wonky and Dinky on the cover looking at each other happily. The colour of the background is striking and would certainly stand out in a row of books. Upon opening the book to the first page, we were drawn to the images, and the colours that were soft, not overpowering to look at. As is the case with the other stories in the series, this is also written in rhyming style, which most kids enjoy.
While reading the children were coming up with different theories on what the big surprise for Dinky could possibly be...I was also trying to guess!

I love reading books with a rhyming style as they are fun, and the children love to get involved to, this style keeps them focused and engaged with the storyline. All 3 children were in fits of laughter everything the words "Hee Haw" were said, and even more so at the sentence "Sometimes it's even whiffier than your dad!" My eldest noticed that the descriptive words showed alliteration. Right the way to the end of the book the children were transfixed and eager to know what was going to happen, and once they saw it there were big smiles on their faces.

Overall we recommend this story to all children, especially young children, it is a fun story with beautiful illustrations throughout. We eagerly await seeing what happens next in the Wonky Donkey series!

The wonky donkey is one of my youngest son's favorite book series so you can imagine his excitement when he saw we had received the Wonky donkey's big surprise book. He grabbed the book and made himself comfortable on the couch to read the story and we had to sit back and listen to him cracking up laughing and telling us to look at the illustrations. His favorite illustration which he kept showing us was a picture of a donkey standing beside a dazed-looking bird lying on a rock and a yellowish gas wafting around the back of the donkey.

The illustrations which are done by Katz Cowley are absolutely amazing and full of vibrant colors which are so suited to the story. The donkey's colors really stood out to me as they are flowing with different tones of green, purple and blue giving the impression of a harlequin look. The story is written in the way of a song with rhymes throughout and it is such a mission to try to read it without breaking out into song. This makes there-readability very high as the kids will love going back and singing through the story again and again.

I recommend this book to anyone with young kids learning to read or just looking to have a blast singing throughout this story. You can even download the song to play alongside the book to add a musical touch. My two sons aged 9 and 11 loved this book as it is something they can just read along laughing at the story and pictures. If you have the other wonky donkey books then this is a must-have for the collection. Craig Smith has written another gem and I hope he continues to carry on with these as they are amazing and great for children.
