P is for Pterodactyl product reviews

From wacky words to peculiar pronunciations, get kids excited about language with this unconventional alphabet book from Raj Haldar (aka Lushlife).

Turning the traditional idea of an alphabet book on its head,P is for Pterodactylis perfect for anyone who has ever been stumped by silent letters or confused by absurd homophones. This whimsical, unique book takes silent letter entries like 'K is for Knight' a step further with 'The noble knight's knife nicked the knave's knee.'

Lively illustrations provide context clues, and alliterative words help readers navigate text like 'a bright white gnat is gnawing on my gnocchi' with ease. Everyone from early learners to grown-up grammarians will love this wacky book where 'A is for Aisle' but 'Y is definitely not for Why.'

The english language can be quite infuriating at times, so many words that just don't sound like you would assume they would given the letters used, not to mention all the words that sounds identical but are completely different and then the ones that are spelt the same and have different meanings... P is for Pterodactyl takes you through the alphabet and gives a wide range of words that start with each letter BUT start with a silent letter (think Knot) or in some cases the starting letter sound is not what you'd use (think Ouija).

Each letter gets its own page which is accompanied by an almost full page picture and underneath the pictures is a sentence that either uses the word to give you an understanding of how it would be used, or a sentence that gives a couple of other words that defy logic. At the back of the book there are a few pages which give you the meaning of each main word as well as having the word written out phonetically to aid with your pronunciation. My word of advice to the adults, if you plan on reading this out loud to your kids, read it through first so you can pronounce it correctly when you read it to them and hopefully not fumble through the alphabet.

This is a fun book, I'm not loving the illustrations but I enjoyed the words picked.
