The House of Magic product reviews

The House of Magic (also known as Thunder and the House of Magic) is a 2013 Belgian-French-American animated fantasy-comedy film on DVD, directed by Jeremy Degruson and Ben Stassen.

Jeremy Degruson and Ben Stassen direct this animated family comedy featuring the voice talents of Murray Blue, Kiefer Sutherland and Ewan McGregor. When housecat Thunder (Blue) is abandoned by his owners he fights to stay safe on the strange and lonely streets. Just in time Thunder comes across a big, scary house occupied by an old magician. Making friends with the old man and most of his inventions, Thunder finally feels safe. When the magician is taken ill his nephew sees an opportunity to sell the house and cash in on the fortune. Hearing the news, Thunder and his new friends put their heads together to think of a way to save the old man and his magical house.

I thought I would be nice and buy some movies so we could watch and have some family time . My 5 year old choose this movie because he liked the picture on the cover so I didn't expect much from the movie. We ended up at a friends house and the kids asked if we could watch the movie.

Five kids were glued to the TV, no kids walked away to go and play or started talking. I found the story started a bit slow but enjoyed the animation . The story was good once you got into it , some parts had me laughing and one point had me saying yes he deserved that. The characters were well done , the nephew provided a lot of comical moments but he certainly was not my favourite character. I really liked how the animals worked together and the scheming nephew got what he deserved.

If I had read the blurb on the DVD cover I probably would not have thought this could be a good movie so I am glad that the cover was interesting enough to catch a young boys attention. Maybe I should let Mr 5 choose movies more often. This is going to be a much watched movie in our collection.

Trying to get the kids to pick a movie to watch for family movie night is never an easy feat, so I narrowed it down to three choices for them and played the trailers for each with the kids settling on The House of Magic. There are a lot of moments in the film where you see the film from the point of view of one or another of the characters, which sets for a few dizzying moments but adds an element of fun to the film. The story follows Thunder as he gets a new family and has to try and fit in where some love him and some are afraid he will take their place.

My three kids were all glued to the TV screen and really enjoyed the movie, not a peep out of a single one of them for the whole film so I know they enjoyed it though not loved it as they didn't ask to watch it again today. The story is fun and there are a few moments for a good laugh though it wasn't the best film I've ever seen, most of it was light hearted though there were a couple of moments that seemed a bit much for a family movie.

I'm in no rush to watch this again but should you want a nice family film then this is a good one to watch.
