The Last of The Spirits product reviews

Sam and Lizzie are freezing and hungry on the streets of Victorian London. When Sam asks a wealthy man for some coins, he is rudely turned away. Months of struggle suddenly find their focus, and Sam resolves to kill the man.

Huddling in a graveyard for warmth, Sam and Lizzie are horrified to see the earth around one of the tombs begin to shift, shortly followed by the wraithlike figure of a ghostly man. He warns Sam about the future which awaits such a bitter heart, and so begins Sam's journey led by terrifying spirits through the past, present and future, after which Sam must decide whether to take the man, Scrooge's, life or not.

A twist on Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. When Orphans Sam and Lizzie ask Scrooge for help on a cold December day, his look sent shivers down Sams back and he decides to give him the ultimate payback by killing him. After breaking into Scrooges house on Christmas Eve Sam is also faced with the three spirits of christmas past, present and future. Just like Scrooge he does not like what he sees and decides to change his outlook and attitude. Little does he know that Scrooge, Lizzie and Sam are destined to be together.

A brilliant twist on the original book, play, movie. Although when I think of the Christmas Carol the first thing that springs to my mind is Michael Caine and the muppets. Whenever Tiny Tim was mentioned I automatically visualised Kermits nephew Robin on crutches. The Scrooge story is basically the same but the twist with the two orphaned children gives it an extra layer.

Its an easy read, a tad predictable, a bit dreary and dark but its still a good read. I like the twist at the end with Marley and the way the spirit world is described especially for selfish people. I am glad Marley got his happy ending and along with the children. Your heart really goes out to the homeless people who live in cold climates with no food and no shelter, it makes you want to go out and help the less fortunate.

If you enjoyed the Christmas Carol you will like the extra spin with this. Also after the story has finished gives you a history lesson on the great story and also on Charles Dickens.

Written by: Diana Wynne Jones

Product image for Charmed LifeWelcome to the worlds of Chrestomanci, where magic is as common as mathematics!

Everybody says that Gwendolyn Chant is a gifted witch with astonishing powers, so it suits her enormously when she is taken to live in Chrestomanci Castle. Her brother Eric (better known as Cat) is not so keen, for he has no talent for magic at all.

However, life with the great enchanter is not what either of them expects and sparks begin to fly!
