I'm not up on my spices but I like this one. I haven't had a lot of chance to experiment with it and had it on lamb but think that I was a bit generous with it. Heat wise, it's pretty good and I look forward to adding it to my bbq's this month especially while the weather is a touch cold.

We added a little bit to soup and I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't over power and ruin it.

I love the old school milk carton look to the packaging and wonder if that uniqueness will make it easier for my friends and family to find after talking about the product. I made a bit of a mess of the plastic packet and the zip lock piece. I find it really hard to get them back into the box as well and often just throw them into the cupboard. I would like to see a name printed on the bag as well, just so I can identify what's what.

I can't wait to get this again not only because it's a good product but to see what the next recipe of the month is that I get. It's a great little addition, although it keeps talking about summer stuff :)

Thanks to KIWIreviews I have discovered Mrs Rogers Seasonings and I'm definitely a convert - they are simple and delicious and very reasonably priced. I also love their eco packs now that I've opened my eyes and discovered the tear tab on them - the first time I opened them up from the bottom!

There is so much I can do with this seasoning that I wasn't sure where to start, but I liked the idea on here of using it to make a dip. I mixed some with cream cheese and it was definitely delicious. I was worried it would be too spicy but it wasn't - although I guess I would depend on how much seasoning you used. I noticed straight away that it really did have a lovely level of salt in it - not too much which was refreshing. You can always add more salt but you can't take it away so it's nice to have that option.

Then I decided to try this on oven wedges and just tossed potatoes in olive oil and this seasoning and baked. I was worried it would be too spicy for my 6 year old and the 3 visiting kiddies so also did plain salted wedges and I was glad I did. Although all the children were keen to try the spicy ones as the colour really appealed, none of them actually liked them! And I have to say hubby wasn't keen either but I already knew he didn't like too much spice. I loved them however but maybe a lot less spice next time would help them be more widely accepted!

After these 2 experiments I still have more in the packet to use and can see myself adding this to all sorts of things just to give flavour bursts. It really is very versatile and I will be buying myself some more when this packet has been used. I just need to remember to be a bit sparing with it for the sake of those who don't like too much spiciness!

We love spice in this house so I was very excited to get the chance to review another amazing Mrs Rogers product. This time it was the cajun seasoning.

I had recently brought a kg of chicken drumsticks that I have been staring at in the freezer wondering what on earth to do with them so when the cajun seasoning turned up I had the perfect idea! I defrosted the chicken drumsticks and threw into a bowl some bread crumbs and a decent heaping (we love spicy) of Mrs Rogers Cajun seasoning into the bowl and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. Mixed it together to make sure it was all thoroughly mixed in and then threw in the chicken. Rolled it round a little and then took them out and into the oven.

The smell while these were cooking was divine. The house had a nice spicy aroma. When I took them out of the oven they were nice and crunchy looking and golden. After taking my first bite I was hooked. The Cajun seasoning is a perfect blend, it is not too hot nor is it mild I would agree it is definitely a medium strength seasoning in terms of spice. It was good to see that the seasoning had not clumped together in big chunks and that in fact it had spread out perfectly.

I think this seasoning is going to become a staple in my cupboard and I am already thinking of what to do with it next. Spicy pumpkin soup for winter is next on the list! Thanks Mrs Rogers and KIWIreviews.

Firstly I wanted to say I find the packaging very cute and makes me feel like I am helping the planet when I look at the box. Very simple to open just pull the tab as it states. Inside you find a packet filled with the seasoning. For the price I think it is excellent value. There is a sheet inside the box which has a Moroccan Lamb salad recipe but no mention of any recipes to do with cajun - which is rather random.

After a very busy day just needed something quick and easy to have for dinner. I had brought some Chicken Drum Sticks on the way home and so just decided to coat with the Mrs Rogers Cajun Seasoning - adding nothing else. I did not cover with much just sprinkling very finely over the chicken and then when I was turning added some more sprinkle on to them - not even using half of the packet. There was no mention of quantity so decided to err on the side of caution and not use much as the girls have had a lot of curry's latey and just wanted something gentle tonight.

I have to say I coated it perfect. It was a beautiful seasoning and we all enjoyed. The flavour carried through perfectly and you could see it sitting nicely on the chicken. After having tonights meal realised there is endless possibilities to what you can do with the flavour and can basically use on everything from vegetables to a nice coated fish. An asset to any kitchen and will definitely be stocking from now on.

Hailing from caribbean heritage (that's in the West Indies) spicy food and curries have really been a part of the traditional family dinners all throughout my life, generally comprising 4 meals a week minimum having spice to it. My pantry currently has a multitude of cajun seasonings, but have found that they were never really the flavour that I was looking for. It was always added in small quantities in addition to other spices.

But this blend was amazing. I just 'scratched' the flesh of the chicken breasts, massaged in several teaspoons of the Mrs Rogers cajun seasoning with some oil, and baked until tender. Served with a simple coleslaw, the chicken required no further seasoning. No salt, no pepper, and no table sauces (tomato, bbq, sweet and sour). The flavour of the cajun chicken was all that I needed. I was genuinely impressed.

I found the packaging to be rather odd. I liked the recycled cardboard look, but as the spice blend came in a tiny ziplock bag, it did seem rather redundant. The ziplock bag itself seemed a good idea. Unfortunately for me, I had already washed the meat before I opened the packet. and the water (or fat/oil) meant that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the damn thing open. I ended up just cutting the bag open, so I'll need to try use the spices up sooner rather than later. Luckily I thoroughly enjoyed the flavour, so it will be no hassle finishing off the packet.

I once came across a recipe for a really simple dip - a couple of teaspoons of a particular brand's cajun seasoning and a pottle of cream cheese blended together. While the recipe was simple, the dip was pretty stunning. Since then, I haven't even looked at another brand. Until a short while ago, when I had the pleasure of chatting to someone fairly high-up in the chef world, who pointed out that the majority of brands pack their 'flavour mixes' out with a heap of salt - it's cheap, it enhances flavour, and no-one seems to notice or care unless they are on a low-sodium diet.

When I found out just how much salt was in my usual brand, I was shocked! A bit of research, and a lucky chance encounter with the Mrs Rogers team at the Auckland Food Show last year, and I was on the road to switching brands thanks to a sampler bag offered as part of the show. I got home with the determination to set up a flavour challenge - Making up a half-portion of dip using my regular brand, and the other half using the Mrs Rogers blend, I ran the family through the gauntlet, with surprising results.

My youngest, who is fussy-as, liked the Mrs Roger's brew but said it was still a little bit too spicy for him. One taste of the other brand and he spat it out, declaring it yukky. Mr Teen liked both, but did point out the Mrs Rogers version as a slight favourite. I found myself easily drawn to the Mrs Rogers variant, but found the flavour quite intense - turns out with so little salt, you also need to use less of it to go the same distance! The ingredients are less diluted, of course. The lady of the house declared her unswerving preference for the Mrs Rogers variety, stating that it just tasted more real and less salty.

I also used this to flavour the water when boiling some rice. While the insoluble bits did make the rice a little crunchy at times, the soluble flavcours got right into every grain, giving them a lovely almost saffron colour and a nice, deep flavour that went really well with some spicy canned tuna. It was a surprisingly good lunch dish, and I plan to refine the process in future to remove the husks while capturing the flavours still.

Overall, an easy win! I have since discovered it goes really well sprinkled over a green salad with a light dressing, it's also just amazing in a ham, cheese and tomato sandwich, and is the perfect way to add some zing to rice dishes that need a little extra oomph. As well as being sealed in a ziplock bag - allowing easy resealing and locking in the flavour, it also comes in an eco-smart recyclable box! A shoo-in for the next UnPackIt Awards!
