Theodore is a lonely man in the final stages of his divorce. When he's not working as a letter writer, his down time is spent playing video games and occasionally hanging out with friends.

He decides to purchase the new OS1, which is advertised as the world's first artificially intelligent operating system, "It's not just an operating system, it's a consciousness," the ad states.

Theodore quickly finds himself drawn in with Samantha, the voice behind his OS1. As they start spending time together they grow closer and closer and eventually find themselves in love. Theodore finds himself dealing with feelings of both great joy and doubt and the dealing with his inner conflict of being in love with an OS.

It takes a very special kind of actor to carry a movie basically by himself, especially when that movie is well, 'weird' I guess you can say and at times awkward. Joaquin Phoenix is a brilliant actor and manages to convincingly portray all kind of emotions. After a messy divorce he buys an Operating System in the hope for some friendship but it quickly escalates to something more. The sex scenes were rather awkward because after all he is doing it to a voice in his ear and it is just disturbing.

This movie is probably a glimpse into the future and I am guessing it will not be too long before OS's are around for companionship. You already have the internet and chat rooms and people getting involved with complete strangers across the globe so this movie is probably the next step.

I can understand why he was nominated for so many awards as his acting is flawless and he is very captivating to watch. Scarlett Johansson is the voice behind the OS and she does so well, especially with her flirty voice. The casting is spot on and the story line is very easy to follow. Probably not the kind of movie for everyone but if you have an open mind it is enjoyable if not a little cringe worthy.
