I bought Sheep on a Beach for my 2-year-old nephewâ ™s birthday as I thought it would be a fun book for him to look at and enjoy. It had a great front cover and had bright and colourful illustrations throughout the book. As I was sending the book to the UK, I really enjoyed the â˜Australianâ ™ phrases that the book had as it made it feel like it came from this neck of the woods!! (Iâ ™m sure my UK relatives wouldnâ ™t know that â˜eskyâ ™ wasnâ ™t a Kiwi term!!)

The story is about a sheep that suddenly finds himself on a beach with his towel, zinc and mobile phone. The book effectively uses repetition (by adding an extra line to the story each page) to build the story and it is very funny, modern and up to date with its references of tweets! By the end of the book there is a lot to read but it is catchy and fun. My sister in law really enjoyed reading it to her son and found that he loved finding the crab (I hadnâ ™t noticed it!) and laughed at the pictures of the sheep in a bikini (they do live in Wales!) A great book to gift for young readers!

This is such a funny catchy book. I loved it from the title page til the end. The story is just brilliant and the pictures made us all laugh.

The story begins with "Sheep" frolicking in his green field and next page he is suddenly "Sheep on the beach" Each page adds an extra line to the story and repeats all of the previous pages lines. It starts to get a bit repetitive but is great for the children to memorise and they start to learn the words and my crew had great fun shouting all the lines as loud as they could. Each page also stars a crab so we had 'spot the crab' all through the book.

This is an Australian book as evidenced with words like "esky" but I loved that it is completely up to date with the line "Ewes all come down to the beach" Tweet!

This is a very funny and enjoyable book and definitely worth a look. I am stoked to have it on our bookshelf as it is a great pick me up if you need to get the kids laughing!

When I saw this book among a pile of books available to review, the cover with its bright colours and bold illustrations appealed to me. I had also spent the morning with my 2 year old pretending to be Mary with a little lamb. I read this picture book to her and her nearly four year old sister. As I predicted, it appealed more to my youngest with the simple illustrations, characters and repetitive text. Throughout the story she was talking to me about the pictures and what the crab was doing.

The story had a definite modern Austrailian feel with an esky and tweeting. There was also a dig at the way so many people talk today with "Ewes." This annoyed me a little as I am constantly trying to discourage children from speaking like that, but I could also see the funny side of it which was the author's intention.

It is a story that repeats, adding a new line every page. To start with it was fun but by the sixth or seventh page there was a lot of reading on each page and I was wondering if it would ever end. My husband made the same comment when he read it to the girls. In saying that, my 2 year old has asked for the book to be read each night since we got it. She is remembering more of the story and reading parts of it herself. The book is growing on me more and by the end of next week I should be able to read it with my eyes closed which is always useful at the end of a long day.
