Tanu Beach Fales product reviews

Welcome to Tanu Beach and our accommodation in Samoa. We offer you a hostel and holiday in our family resort, teaching and showing the rich culture to backpackers in the most beautiful beach surroundings. Enjoy traditional lifestyle on the white sandy beach of Manase on the Island of Savaii.

Tanu Beach started 14 or 15 years ago when travelers came to our village Manase to enjoy the beautiful beach and conventional life. A few "fales" (huts) were built the traditional way directly on the beach in untouched nature and we had the pleasure to share our food and life with our guests. At this time we didn't know how important it was for people from the western world to go back to nature and experience people with an open heart, as we live this way every day. Today a few more travelers are visiting us and we have more "Fales" (huts), but the nature and our heart is still there and we love to share it with you...

In our country, love for your family and friends is much more important than money and if you came 100 years ago you would have staid for free. Today we do need your small contribution to bring food on the table and to keep a good international standard. We will do all we can to give you a very special experience together with our family and we will also be happy to show you the rest of the island if you decide to join us in one of our tours.

Let us take you to the beautiful "Afu Aau" waterfall on the south coast of Savaii. Here you will be able to swim in the cool pool underneath the fall. At the spectacular "Taga Blow whole" you will be able to see the sea water shooting up 30 meter high in the sky from a whole in the rock. Tapa making (a kind of natural material made from the bark of a tree) is a traditional way of making art and cloths for cultural events which we will be able to watch during the trip. Our national rainforest is protected in a beautiful area at the western end of the island, called "Falealupo". In the forest you will be able to walk between the tree on the canopy walkway. At the black lava fields on the north eastern side, it can still be seen how the lava was flowing at the volcanic eruption in the beginning of the century.

Our visit to Tanu Beach Fales was not our first and a return visit was most welcome. Shortly after our arrival I was greeted by name and asked if I was still vegetarian. It means a lot when staff and family of a place you stayed at once before remembers your name and dietary requirements. And like last time, every breakfast and evening I was treated to some of the most delicious vegetarian meals I've had in Samoa.

The food is simple and traditionally Samoan - Breadfruit, Taro, fish, chicken, beef, fresh fruits and vegetables and so on (mine was minus the meat) and the serving sizes are generous - this is Samoa after all. All food portions are very generous. The dining is communal and relaxed and the staff serving were professional and courteous and very friendly.

Tanu does not promise to be anything more than it is - simple beach fales in traditional Samoan style, with an evening meal and breakfast for the weary traveller. There is a simple store on site to provide plenty of cold drinks and emergency snacks.

The beach Fales are very simply equipped. A mattress and a mosquito net, with a sheet and pillows added for comfort. Because of the heat in Samoa this really is all you need. Each Fale does have an electric light to bring some level of the 21st century to Samoa. If you find the mattress is too thin for your liking, the staff are very accommodating in providing a second mattress to increase the base thickness.

All the fales are very close to the beach, with some of them right on the beach so you can settle in to your fale and jump in the sea all within 2 minutes. Between the sea, the fales and trips around the island the whole time spent at Tanu was very relaxing.

The only slight downside to Tanu Beach Fales is the toilet and washing facilities - there are two shower blocks for the whole site - with a single shower and two toilets in each the mens or ladies side of the block. At peak holiday times, this must get frustrating for the guests, but since both times we stayed there were off-peak, it wasn't too much of a problem. Again the facilities here are basic but importantly they are clean and functional.

Tanu Beach Fales is certainly a place we will be visiting again; when you are treated like family whilst staying there it makes you want to visit again. The slower more relaxed pace of life is what one needs to recharge your batteries.
