Fireworks in my opinion has to be one of the best if not the best tool available for creating and optimising images for web display available today. I used to use Photoshop for all my graphics work, but now for any web or even some graphics I want for some software i'm writing I use Fireworks.
There are a large number of plugins available for Fireworks either from the Macromedia/Adobe Exchange, or from a large number of sites on the web but be warned some of theses plugins will cost you, but the cost is generally worth it considering the large number of working hours alot of these plugins will save you.
The interface is very nice and simple and very uncluttered to maximise the workspace.
The other feature of value is it's integration with the other tools in the Studio suite. So to sum it all up this tool will be well used for a long time to come.
