A compelling tale of heroism and sacrifice, intrigue and magic...

The V'ornn invasion has brought Kundala to the brink of catastrophe. And now Riane, the newly incarnated Dar Sala-at, hero of ancient prophecy, must face a new danger. Her protector and mentor, the Kundalan sorceress Giyan, is gradually being possessed by a powerful daemon. In order to save her, Riane must find the fabled Veil of a Thousand Tears, said to have been created from the tears of the Five Sacred Dragons of Miina.

But Riane is not the only one who seeks the Veil. The sinister V'ornn Nith Batoxxx has his own reasons for pursuing this mystical object. And he will stop at nothing in his quest; soon Riane will be fighting for her life, just as Giyan's existence, and with it the safety of Kundala, hangs in the balance.

Love and loyalty are tested to the limit in this richly imagined epic fantasy.

Tucker   Review #69 - Dated: 13th of December, 2003
  Author: Tucker

This one really took me by surprise. I am not usually into fantasy, but with this Review job on my plate now, I seem to be getting a pile of fantasy to read. It's starting to grow on me, and with stories like this one, I am not complaining!

Despite the fact that this is book 2 of a trilogy, I found the story to be very complete in itself, relying little on an intimate knowledge of Book 1. What should have been gleaned from Book 1 was filled in with cleverly done flashbacks, memories and conversations.

The characters are full, with histories, secrets and abilities that are revealed with consumate skill at key moments, bringing the plot forward in smooth, powerful strokes. The fine blend of magic and advanced science left me spellbound, no pun intended.

Overall, I really can not praise this highly enough, it is one of the finest pieces of fantasy literature I have had the pleasure of reading in many moons. I feel the urge to track down some more Van Lustbader and see if this is a style, or a theme.
