Anathoth is a brand that is popular in our whole extended family as it is as close to home made as we can get. We grew up with home made jams and relish and Anathoth products taste home made. We like the larger containers but would love it if the packaging was a bit more environmentally friendly such as glass jars instead of plastics....

This relish never lasts long in our house. Even the kids (who don't know there is onion in this) eat it. Apparently onions are revolting. But not in this product. It is very versatile. It is great on cold cuts of meat such as ham (and great over summer when we have ham on the bone at almost every meal), great on burgers, in cheese balls, in sandwiches turning them from meh to amen!! You don't need a lot to give a burst of flavour. It even makes a simple cheese sandwich delicious. We love it especially with brie or smoked cheese. Another bonus for us is that it is gluten free as we are a coeliac household. We try and avoid artificial colours and flavours so it is reassuring to know that this product ticks all the boxes for us in terms of being healthy.

Anathoth is a brand I really trust and I often buy their products despite having a decent homemade relish supply each summer! I love anything with sweet onions as the main ingredient and this is fantastic because it goes with everything. I also buy the beetroot relish but tend to buy this caramelised onion relish more often as the beetroot relish can be a bit too sweet.

I think this relish is really good value for money and it means that you don't have to sweat and cry over onions yourself. It makes a really good addition to a hamper if you're desperately looking for a gift and happen to be in the supermarket. Add some cheese, crackers & sourdough bread and bingo, happy recipient.

I really appreciate the fact that Anathoth make small batches and the payoff is in the flavour of all their products. We eat this at home any time of the year but particularly in summer with ham, tomatoes & avocado on homemade oaty bread. Whoever we serve it to love it so much that they end up buying it themselves. I've tried a few onion relishes from the supermarket and artisan ones from markets but this one is hands down the best value for money.

I don't know what it is about anything caramelised onion but both my husband and I love it! There is just so many different uses for it. My husband has a favourite brand of caramelised onion relish so there is always a stock in the cupboard. I had a little trouble convincing him to try a new brand but once he did it's safe to say there's no going back. Anathoth Farm has become our new must have!

I first decided to try it in burgers, I simply threw in a bit along with the patties, cheese and coleslaw. The relish really lifted the burger up, the relish is the perfect balance of sweet and savory as any decent caramelised onion should be. My husband enjoyed it after his first couple of bites he got up and added more to his burger.

Since then I have tried it in many different ways, in my lunchtime wraps and sandwiches, with cheese and crackers, in stuffed chicken breasts and on top of steak. I don't think there is anything you couldn't use the relish for. With all the ways I have tried it I think my favourite is using it when I make a platter including bread and spreads. It's perfect mixed in with some cream cheese and served with some slightly warmed bread. I have served it up to many of my friends and it has been a hit with all of them, many of them have now started buying it as well.

Caramelised onion appears on all sorts of menus at the moment - restaurants, pizza places, sandwhich shops and fancy burger joints. The name of it certainly makes it sound nice, a mix of sweet and savoury mixed together. Despite having seen caramelised onion in a lot of places it is something I have yet to try. When I saw the Anathoth Caramelised Onion Relish up for review I quickly hit the request button as I had a number of ways in mind to try it.

Burgers are a regular staple meal in our house as they are so easy to prepare and both my husband and I like them. I have, however, gotten into a bit of a rut with them, making the same combination every time. This time I had something new to try! And wow - the caramelised onion relish made such a delicious change to our usual burgers. Salad, chicken, bacon, hash brown and cheese was made even more delicious with this beautiful relish. It certainly isn't too sweet, but it isn't completely savory either. It was certainly much nicer than cooking up onions by themselves and putting them in the burger. The relish will now be added to all of our burgers in the future.

Having read a few of the reviews already placed on KIWIreviews I decided the next place to try it was on cheese and crackers. I am definitely a savory fan and cheese and crackers is one of my favourite snacks. I am happy enough with a slice of cheddar cheese on a plain cracker, but the relish certainly brought a difference to my cheese and crackers. Once again not too sweet, but not completely savory. A beautiful addition that I will use on future cheese platters, especially coming up to Christmas.

This is one product that will be put into our shopping cart. The price seems very reasonable too, as I can see one container going a long way. You certainly don't need a lot to be able to taste it among other ingredients.

While already a fan of the Whitlocks caramelised onion chunky relish, I thought trying something else the same (yet hopefully different!) would be nice. Well, nice isn't how to describe it. Delicious, versatile and wow only start to describe the delectable flavours which tickled the taste buds!!

Being New Zealand made, it already ticked boxes before I even opened the container to try. No preservatives or added flavours to get in the way of the natural flavours certainly sealed the deal...and so we (husband as well who couldn't stay away) were ready to dip right in!! Lovely consistency with the chunkiness which is the onion and definitely felt like a relish as opposed to just a spread. We accompanied the relish with a typical cheese and cracker board and it certainly created the most yummiest cheeseboard we've had so far!

We like buying foods (spreads, relishes, sauces etc) that are versatile and not just for one use. So we started exploring. On burgers? Check and delicious! So much nicer than just onions on their own and gave a new dimension to homemade burgers without having to put too many extra fillings on. Next was pizza, and although it tasted yummy on there with chicken and bacon, it didn't spread well enough and we ended up with clumps. Not their fault, it was our exploring and want for it to be spreadable just this once haha. And finally we tried on the side with steak, eggs and chips...oh a winning combination right there!! We know what will be in our shopping cart more often, especially over summer with more and more BBQs we will be having.

A product we will highly recommend to others and will happily include in our food gift baskets in the future. Now to try some other Anathoth products...

I've always been a fan of Branston's pickle to brighten up my cheese sandwiches but was keen to see how Anathoth Farms Caramelised Onion Relish would compare. The relish comes in a sturdy, see-through tub and it's nice to know that it is made in New Zealand and is Gluten Free.

I first tried this Relish in a cheese sandwich and what can I say but WOW! The caramelised onions had just enough sweetness without being too sugary and was delicious! I told my husband to try them when I went out one evening and the first thing he said when I got home was how good the Relish was. He had them with cheese and crackers and had to put the tub back because he was scared of eating it all! High praise indeed! Tonight, he was excited about cooking burgers so he could add the Relish and debated about cooking onions but decided against it. Well, what can I say, this Relish took the burgers to the next level and even our (fussy!) daughters loved it! I can honestly say that I actually prefer it to fried onions and even Branston's pickle as it's not as sweet and has a smoother consistency.

This Relish is now a new family favourite and can be added to pretty much any meal it's so versatile. If you haven't tried it then I recommend you do, you will not be disappointed! I'm now going to explore other products in the Anathoth Farm range!

Anathoth Farm caramelised onion relish is a new favourite in our household and one that will continue to be on our fridge shelve at all times no matter what ^:) When I requested this product for review I thought that it may be yummy, and that it may add something special to my homemade pizza. However I had no idea that it would be beyond yummy, more like amazingly delicious and that it would transform just about every single meal we have eaten since... breakfast, lunch and dinner meals that is!

Anathoth Farm is a brand I have tried before, with another product out of their range (beetroot chutney) which I simply love. I have also always heard good things about the taste and quality of their products so I was definitely keen to try another product in their range. I am happy to report that this product is definitely big on taste and quality and is right up their with the other product I love. I think its fair to say that this brand in general is big on taste and quality and is one you can trust to deliver both of these in all of their products. I think I will now be buying more of their range to try as well ... and perhaps a new fridge to go with it as when looking in the supermarket I realised their range is quite extensive!

The first way we tried Anathoth caramelised onion relish was with cheese on crackers and this proved to be very yummy. Even my (sometimes fussy) 3 year old happily tried it and ate one cracker which I was impressed with. The chutney is quite sweet, and has a really nice caramel taste to it while still remaining the taste of onion. Mixing it with cheese still allowed for this taste to shine through and mixed really nicely for an afternoon snack. We then went on to add this to our chicken salad for dinner and again had the same delicious results. A few days later lunch called for something extra so we added this to toasted muffin splits along with bacon and melted cheese. Wow, this blew my taste buds and I reckon I could have easily eaten an entire pack of muffin splits this way (in one go) haha. We've also added this chutney to scrambled eggs, pizza's, sausages on the BBQ and chicken schnitzel.

My husband seems to think that this chutney is very similar (if not the same one) that McDonalds used to put on his favourite burger - which they stopped doing - so he's totally amazed to have found this product and has quickly been adding it to every meal we eat. I too am so stoked to have found this product as I feel like it adds that something extra to every meal that we've tried it with. The taste easily matches and is strong enough it doesn't get lost mixed with other flavours but not to strong that it overpowers other flavours too, it really is just perfect.

This relish comes in an easy to use, sturdy container and keeps nice and fresh in the fridge (if it lasts that long anyway) and is definitely great value for money. I totally recommend you go out and buy this product today! Your taste buds will not be disappointed.

As a child I always disliked cooked onions.Something about the lack of flavour and the texture always put me off. Raw onions I was fine with; in fact I loved the crunch of them and the burst of them in salads. But the soft, bland, and soggy cooked onions never appealed to me. But over the years I've slowly come around to them, in certain forms. One of these forms was caramelised onions. They still had the texture that I wasn't too much of a fan of, but the flavour went brilliantly well when placed inside a steak sandwich, and it opened my eyes to them.

So that is how I tried this product out. I cooked a rare to medium-rare steak, and placed it in a toasted ciabatta roll with some salad leaves. A very simple meal that with the steak cooked as it was took only a few minutes. The steak itself was still dripping juices, but the meal as a whole was still a bit dry; enter the caramelised onions!

Grabbing the product, there was some weight to it. It weighed almost half a kilo, which seems great value for only $4.99. It has a very easy to open screw top lid. The contents itself are quite surprising. The onions are cut a lot smaller than I am used to seeing. This gives it much more of a "thick sauce" texture, making it look a little like Branston pickle. The caramelised onions also look more murky than other comparable products, where it is difficult to differentiate the onion from the sauce it comes with. But the upside to the smaller onion pieces, is that it is easier to use, without all the dangling pieces. You can add exactly however much you need.

Flavour-wise this product is quite sweet and has some sharp notes. It gave the steak sandwich some much needed extra flavour, and definitely felt more like pickled onions rather then the everyday brown or red were used. But I enjoyed it. Despite its lack of aesthetic appeal, it did what it was designed to do, and provided some different flavours. All for a great price.

This has honestly become one of our staple go to's in our house for so many amazing dishes. Having stumbled across this at a recent BBQ where it was lavishly added to a gourmet beef burger straight from the BBQ I have to say we were converted. Even my staunch "mans man" husband absolutely loves this. The fact it is an NZ made product for me is the big plus, its great to support local any and every opportunity that we have but it's more than that. It's tangy, it's sweet, it's absolutely delish.

I have found many uses beyond just my humble home-made burgers. To take this next level I have used it on an amazing, if I do say so myself, baked Camembert recipe, served with this relish and a variety of crackers and breads. The tartness and sweetness of relish just melts in your mouth with the smooth melted texture of the cheese and is to absolutely die for.....I add the relish right on top of the piping hot cheese so every dip gets the oniony goodness. Or you can always put it to the side for those less game, or dairy free.

Clearly we love it, and anyone who is a "relish" fan will too.

Sausage on bread with onions is something that most kiwis like. The sausages are very quick to cook up but onions take a bit more time to prepare and cook. I found that this onion relish was a perfect substitute for plain onions. It even provided extra flavour and I didn't need to add any tomato sauce in addition to the relish.

I also love bread scrolls with onion in them, I have purchased them before but I haven't had great success in making them from scratch (ie making the onion mix). This relish worked absolutely perfectly in the scrolls. I made a simple bread dough with brown flour, rolled it out, layered the relish over the dough and sprinkled some Parmesan cheese over the top. I then rolled it all up and cut it into slices. These were then cooked and they tasted perfect both hot and cold. The relish kept the bread nice and moist and they still tasted fine for a couple of days after I cooked them.

Every time I open the container that the relish is in, I find that my nose enjoys the smell which comes out. I can definitely smell vinegar quite strongly, however it isn't overpowering. It is a smell that makes me want to grab some and eat it with my meal! The container has 42 servings in it and therefore plenty of opportunity to try the relish out in various ways. Although I won't be measuring each serving in 10 gram lots, I have used the relish quite a bit so far and I still have lots left.

I am very keen to give my family real food rather than a concoction of chemicals. I really appreciate the fact that Anathoth Farm have used ingredients that are totally recognisable and ones that I could used in my own home if I so chose. With this huge positive in mind, it is important to note that this product does need to be kept in the fridge after opening. This would be the same if it was a homemade relish as it doesn't contain added preservatives.

Since I received this relish to try, I have used it in many ways in addition to the ways mentioned above. I have used it with cheese on toast, cheese and crackers, on pizzas, just to name a few. It has been perfect every time. This is an extremely versatile relish which goes really well with meat, cheese, crackers and bread. It is a great product to have in the fridge and I will be buying it again.

The last time I ever got Anathoth Farm products, I was impressed with the sheer size of the tubs but found the container too hard to open. I'm not sure if they have changed anything recently with regards to that, but I was very happy when these lids twisted to open and to re-lock. As always the size of the tub was also impressive!

I already like caramelised onion. So I figured unless something went terribly wrong, I'd like this. High on my list of wrong things is vinegar flavours. But I didn't have to worry. This product has a deliciously smooth caramelised flavour. The onion is sweet, without being too sweet. I think I could easily eat this off a spoon, and not feel any need for additional flavours.

Still I did need to have a play and see what I could use it for. I made burgers the first night. This was absolutely delicious with a bit of cheese and an Angus beef patty. The next day, it was delicious with some pastrami and smoked cheese on a grilled sandwich. It was great as a toast topping with warm butter. It was excellent on macaroni cheese too.

The size of the tub has meant that I still have a small amount left, but I am burning through it very quickly and I will be looking to replace it soon. At $4.99 a tub, this is great quality and value for money. It's a bit fancy, but still in a good price point for everyday use. There's so many things you can do with this product too. I didn't even scratch the tip of the iceberg on it's versatility. Coming into summer, with all the seasonal celebrations and BBQs, I really think this is one of those products you are going to want in your fridge.

I found that this product was just as versatile as the other Anathoth products I have tried so far. Knowing I was going to be short of time for dinner, I planned a very simple meal consisting of cannellini beans, leftover vegetables, and good old Kiwi sausages. This is the sort of meal that goes well with a good quality sauce or relish as it lifts mundane ingredients to a whole new level. It was quick to prepare and very satisfying indeed.

We had two visitors on this occasion - a colleague from work and his eight-year-old son - and they were good people to try some review items with because they are both self-confessed sausage addicts! Mr Eight cleared his plate and then asked for another two sausages so that he could have some more of the relish! I usually fry up my own onions when I am serving sausages, but with the caramelised onion already in the relish I did not need them. His asking for a second helping was praise indeed. As for me and the two other adults, we all agreed that it was quite different from other relishes we have tried, and were unanimous in giving it the thumbs up.

I tried it in two other dishes. First, I made some sandwiches for a lunchtime picnic. These were a combination of grated cheddar, chopped fresh chives, and a generous layer of caramelised onion. I made two sandwiches apiece but it was very soon clear that I could easily have made double. The fresh bread and flavoursome filling were so nice that we nearly came to blows over who should have the last sandwich.

The last combination was one that I have not tried before but which was inspired by the wide availability of cheese and similar scones in cafes and on supermarket home baking shelves. I made a basic scone mix and stirred in three tablespoons of the relish and a cup of mild cheese just before the final mix. They were served straight from the oven with butter, and they had to be among the most decadent foods I have eaten for a long time. I am not the world's best scone maker - I am just adequate - but this batch was outstanding. I was sorry there were other people there when they came out of the oven because I think I could quite easily have finished the lot myself.

My whole family who are huge fans of the Anathoth Farm range of products we have tried so far were super excited to try out this Caramelised Onion Relish, especially after having tried out Anathoth Farm's amazingly delicious BBQ Burger Relish. We love to add caramelised onions to many dishes we make at home both as part of a main dish, or as a condiment on the side, so we were excited to see this product available for review and couldn't wait to try it out.

The relish comes in a clear plastic container, which is great as it allows you to see the actual product before you buy it, I loved that I could see real ingredients through the container such as mustard seeds and bits of currants, this gave me hope that this product was going to be amazing. The labeling itself is clear and well labeled, describing exactly what is in the container, without having to many words and images all over the place as some labels do, it is clear and to the point so easy to read on a supermarket shelf. It is an easy to open container with a simple twist to turn lid.

I first tried this relish on a pizza, instead of putting a sauce down on the base I opted to use this relish in place. It was easy enough to spread and I loved that there were lovely large chunks throughout of onions and currants, I topped the pizza off with some baby spinach leaves, diced chicken, bacon and cream cheese, also a sprinkling of cheddar and baked it in the oven. It smelt divine as it cooked and as soon as I opened up the oven down I was hit with a beautifully caramel smell due to the relish. The pizza tasted incredible and the relish really added a whole new level of taste to the meal, much better than what we have used in the past, my partner loved it and said it was "the best caramelised onion sauce i've had", Miss 3 also enjoyed it and said it tasted like "apple and raisins".

My partner couldn't stop talking about this relish and had to take the container to his Mum's for dinner one night to have on his meal lol, and they have also commented on how much they liked it, we served it on top of steaks, as a replacement for the usual grilled onions which everyone loved as a alternative. This relish we have found also goes really well on sausages, in wraps, and in caramelised onion and feta tarts. It's also equally incredible on crackers with cheese. It has the perfect balance of sweetness and caramel and the amount of herbs and spices used is just right, it seems that there are so many dishes that this will work well in.

This is another great product from Anathoth Farm, one which will be a regular in our house. I love the quality of the product and even better still that it is made right here in New Zealand from locally sourced products. Best of all it is gluten free, with no added preservatives, colours or flavours a wonderful added bonus. A great product at a great price.
