Straight away the illustrations and colours grabbed my three children's attention when they saw this book. Master 2.5 immediately asked me to read it , so we settled into the reading chair and opened it up . The book itself is very good quality , nice thick-ish pages , and a sturdy cover - always a plus for a child's book !! The illustrations draw you in - they are cartoon-ish , but very easily recognisable as what they are supposed to be e.g. bunny , crocodile , mole . My eldest daughter asked who the illustrator and author were - and we were pleasantly surprised that in fact it is the same person - Tim Warnes. The characters in the book are very well thought out - almost like a younger and older sibling - or the sensible and adventurous child . Mole is sensible and serious and likes to label everything , while the Lumpy - Bumpy Thing ( crocodile ) is more adventurous and likes to push the boundaries , and does not like to heed warnings ! It reminds me so much of my oldest and middle child !! I loved that Lumpy - Bumpy Thing was such a literal name - gave it a cute twist ! The book starts off explaining that Mole likes to label things . It goes on to have the duo find a little white bunny , much to their delight . The Lumpy - Bumpy Thing then finds a hat , and not heeding the warning to not touch .... disaster happens - bunnies - and a LOT of them ! Mole is happy with this , for a while - meanwhile the Lumpy - Bumpy Thing is DELIGHTED with the little creatures . When Mole spots one going for his veggie garden , he is NOT happy - and a solution is inadvertently discovered to the bunny issue . Unfortunately , the Lumpy - Bumpy Thing just does not learn his lesson , and shortly after finds a magic wand - uh oh !! This book intrigued my nearly seven year old , my four and a half year old and Mr two and a half, so there is a broad age range it is suitable for . Mr 2.5 simply liked the multiple bunnies but Miss 4.5 and nearly 7 really understood , remarking that he should have listened to " his mole " - likening Mole to a Mummy ! We had a lot of fun reading all the labels on items in the book , predicting what might happen next , and trying to name the bunnies even . The illustrations were great - lots of detail and colour that grabbed the attention. Overall, this is a great book - gorgeous pictures , a fun story with a good message underlying it. Look forward to more from Tim Warnes - a talented writer and illustrator. |

The illustration on the front of the book is very cute. It grabbed my attention and the kids loved it too. The title was also very intriguing. I often wish that I had labels all over my house telling my children what they could touch or not touch! The characters in the book work well. Mole is a sensible character, while the Lumpy-Bumpy Thing acts a young child and displays more erratic behaviour. The name Lumpy-Bumpy Thing reflects a name that a child might call his or her soft toy. I thought this was very cute. It would have been an obvious choice to call it a crocodile but the Lumpy-Bumpy Thing works so much better. It even gives the feeling that this character might be a little more mischievous and less controlled. Even when the Lumpy-Bumpy Thing just manages to get out of a situation it can't control, it finds something else to fiddle with. The Lumpy-Bumpy Thing never learns. The book gives a strong message that you shouldn't touch things unless you know what they are. It is even more important to take note of what is written and explained to you about things which are out-of-bounds or dangerous. Again, this is something that young children need to learn and this book portrays beautifully that things can go badly wrong when you don't listen to someone with a bit of sense. I have a little Miss Three who I need to read this book over and over to. I think there needs to be some discussion with it as well to get the idea into her head. This book is fun for younger children and Miss Three certainly enjoyed it. It also worked really well with Mr Six. He loved the labels all over the place and thought some of them were funny. It was good reading practice for him, as well as some additional fun. The illustrations are nice and bright and there are lots of details. Every bunny has its own expression and we enjoyed looking at them. The kids thought the bunnies were super cute. Overall, this is a gorgeous, fun book by Tim Warnes. I think that a wide variety of children will really enjoy this book and perhaps learn a thing or two about taking note of important signs! |
