I have always enjoyed The Lighthouse Keeper's books. I've read many of them to my junior classes over the years and they have always been popular. Obviously we weren't the only ones that enjoyed them as they are being republished. Some, including this one, are also available as eBooks. I don't know if it is the romantic ideas of lighthouses or all the mishaps that we know are going to happen that appeals. I also like that Mrs Grinling although a traditional housewife is the clever one that has a solution to every dilemma.

The cover of The Lighthouse Keeper's Christmas immediately appealed to my daughters (4.5 and 6 years old). My youngest was giggling at the Christmas tree on the top of the lighthouse while my eldest could see that the seagulls wanted the presents in the basket. This was certainly the ideal picture to grab the kids' attention and pick it from the pile of books for me to read.

The story is about the Mr Grinling's last Christmas at the lighthouse with his wife. Their nephew George has come to stay for the holidays. Mr Grinling and George are stuck at the lighthouse on Christmas Eve and are worried that they will miss Santa and all the treats that come with Christmas.

Along with the story there were speech bubbles from the animals and postcards to read. Both girls insisted I read each bit even though it made perfect sense with out the speech bubbles they added a fun dimension to the book especially when I used different voices.

Inside the back cover is photos of the eight Lighthouse Keepers book. Miss 4.5 is now on a mission to find all the others in our local library so I can read them to her.

The Lighthouse Keeper series of books are pretty special I remember them from when I myself was young as they have been around for such a long time they really are a classic children's picture book that generations of children have enjoyed. We already own and have reviewed The Lighthouse Keeper's Cat which my son really loves so were excited to be selected to review this book. It's always nice to have a Christmas Story to read at this time of year and this one is pretty special.

In this book Mr and Mrs Grinling's nephew George is coming to stay for Christmas which is pretty special for Mr Grinling as it is his last Christmas as a Lighthouse Keeper, yip that's right the Lighthouse Keeper is retiring from his duties as a lighthouse keeper. Celebrating Christmas Day at the Lighthouse seems like a splendid idea so when Christmas Eve dawns George and Mr Grinling set off to the lighthouse to make some Christmas Eve preparations.

Becoming stuck at the lighthouse George and Mr Grinling must find special ways to celebrate Christmas Eve and of course let Santa know where George is, they can't go letting Santa forget George on Christmas Day. I liked this factor as all children would find it alarming if Santa Claus didn't know where to go on xmas eve. This was a very special book which definitely created the idea that Christmas is all about giving (even to pesky seagulls) and spending time with your family and friends is the most important of all.

The Lighthouse Keeper Mr Grinling really did have a pretty special Christmas as the last Christmas as a Lighthouse Keeper. George had a pretty special Christmas too and thanks to Mrs Grinling saving Christmas Day in her special way everyone was able to celebrate together.

I am definitely keen to extend our Lighthouse Keeper collection as they are such special books, I think we will keep reading this one in the lead up to Christmas. But we may find more Lighthouse Keeper books under the tree on Christmas Day!
