Alexander knew it was going to be a terrible day when he woke up with gum in his hair.

His best friend deserted him. There was no dessert in his lunch bag. And, on top of all that, there were lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV!

This handsome new edition of Judith Viorst's classic picture book is sure to charm readers of all ages.

This is a lovely story. I read it with my son who is also named Alexander and he giggled throughout. It's a great story about how some days everything just seems to go wrong but then there is light at the end of the tunnel. Tomorrow is another day and things will get better. My son really related to it, we read it several times together. Often with young kids, things can seem so black and white, everything seems to go wrong, nothing is going right and there is no way to fix things. But this book has a lovely message within, that while it may seem like nothing is going right, in fact things will get better. And because all the things that went wrong for Alexander were quite funny, it also encourages us as readers to laugh and see the light side of the situation, see the funny side of things that go wrong It's all just part of life and humour can go a long way to dealing with mistakes, bad luck and hiccoughs. In sum, I would highly recommend this book for children aged 4-8 years, It is particularly good to read with a child that is having a bad day or has recently had a bad day, this book will probably pick them right up.

Since Cai was born 18 months ago we have been getting back into picture books that my daughter had long grown out of, it has been so much fun going back through all the old books as well as collecting some new ones. This particular book was one of mine from when I was a young girl that I had given to my daughter when she was young.

It is quite a long story but as I read it with that sulky kid voice my son will sit and listen to the whole book no problems. It is such a great story about a little boy who is having a really terrible day, from gum in his hair, and nothing nice in his lunch box to getting wet in a puddle and seeing kissing on TV it really was a really bad day for poor Alexander who really wished he was in Timbuktu. His mum however let him know that everyone has bad days even in Timbuktu.

Such a nice book to talk about having a bad day and reminding children that tomorrow is another day and things will be better. My son is still a little young to laugh at the content of the things that happen to Alexander but I remember my daughter when she was little used to find it a really funny book and it was one of my favourites when I was little too.
