Like any new mother I looked forward to bonding with my child as I breastfed. Apparently my breasts did not get the memo and to this day are still for decorative purposes only.

So much to my frustration I found myself out of the hospital and no way of feeding my hungry baby. Luckily I had been given at my baby shower some Avent Baby Bottles.

I had been warned by other mothers, as well as the midwife, that most babes won't take to the first type of bottle. That I would need to try my daughter on a variety before we would find the best fit.

Much to my delight my girl absolutely loved Avent. Being a larger baby she had a powerful hunger and a very strong suck. The bottles came with newborn teats which were perfect for her. It enabled her to slow down and in those early days it stopped her from having the gas and colic problems that plagued most of my antenatal group.

The shape of the bottle was great in that there was nowhere for germs to hide away and they were easy to wash. Thankfully replacement rings were easy to buy as I managed to put a couple down the waste disposal before I became practiced at making sure everything was out of the sink before I realised the water.

As friends and colleagues have had their children I have have recommended Avent. It's a reasonable price, they are easy to use and clean, babies love them. And best of all you can get replacement parts and they are found in most baby stores and supermarkets so it's not a mission to buy new teats or other parts when needed.

The avent bottle is a great bottle to start your little one on. It has different teat numbers that range in flow from new born flow right through to a fast flow for those wee ones who like to guzzle their bottles.

They are easy to clean and fit in majority of sterilisers. Perfect for putting in the dishwasher when your child is older as the materials they are made of are very hard wearing. I have found these are one of very few bottles where the writing on the side of the bottle doesn't rub off! Which makes life easier when measuring how many mls as it won't be a guessing game like a few other brands. Not only do they come in the larger size bottle they also come in a compact teeny 120ml size which is perfect for newborns and their teeny tiny tummies.

It has a great anti colic system where it uses an adapter ring inside the bottle and a specially shaped teat to help with air flow. This helps dramatically from keeping the air into the bottle and away from your little ones stomach which stops wind and an upset baby.

Avent also has a range of extras you can buy and add to the bottles such as handles, which are fantastic for teaching young ones to hold onto their bottles. They have extra lids to go on so when your wee one has grown out of bottles you can also use them for storage containers for food such as grapes, cheese and other toddler snacks.

4 years ago when I had my son I tried to breast feed but couldn't. I tried several different bottles and teats. The only teat he would take milk from was the Avent ones. We didn't buy the smaller bottles because we knew he would out grow them too fast.

The 260ml bottles are a really nice size for making the milk in. He liked the length of the teat because smaller teats would fall out the side of his mouth when he sucked. He was really easy to burp when using these bottles because of the adapter ring. He didn't have many spills when using this bottle but he had lots of spills when were tried a different bottle.

I felt good knowing the plastic was BPA free and was safe for my son to use over and over again.

I liked how the numbers/measurements went pretty much all the way to the bottom of the bottle so I could accurately tell how much milk he had drunk. It was also easy to tell how much was left over. The only downfall I found was the numbers started to disappear/fade and this made it very hard to make the bottles. The price was reasonable enough to buy a new one when this happened, but would have preferred for the measurements to last a bit longer.

Being an early childhood teacher who has worked with under two's for the last several years I have many experiences with these bottles! Once upon a time and every child I looked after would have only this brand of bottle as it was considered the best of the best.

The positives of these bottles are that they are really sturdy, seem to be made of thick plastic (BPA free of course), they are wide necked, easy to clean and the measurements on the side of the bottle seem to last the distance and don't rub/wear off. The biggest positive to me is the fact that these bottles have such a large range of extra's that all go with these bottles meaning the bottle grows with your child - you can add handles and change the teat to a spout etc.

One negative I have to mention is that we have a lot of problems (with a lot of different children) where they seem to be able to suck the teat in this bottle flat which ends in lots of frustration for the child and them drinking lots of extra air as when they do let go of the teat it bubbles away. On the whole this is enough to put me off all the positives of these bottles and personally I will be using another brand with my own baby once she's here.

When I had my first baby, I started with an Avent manual breast pump. I liked to use these bottles to collect my milk in. The bottles are nice and big and meant that if I happened to get a full 100 mls out of one side, I didn't have to change bottles before trying the other side. I also found that these bottles freeze pretty well. I had to freeze them when I ran out of storage options for my milk.

When I finally went back to work, I moved to a different brand electric pump. My baby at the time would not take an Avent bottle, but this changed over time. By the time she was a toddler, she was happily drinking from an Avent bottle and the larger style bottle was what she needed for her naps and nightly bottle. When we weaned, she would still have her Avent bottle at night but she would have it with a sippy cup Avent attachment. This meant that we got so much more use out of the bottle because everything in the Avent range converts.

This time around my baby will not take an Avent bottle, but I still use the bottles for breast milk storage. They also make great containers for measuring out liquid ingredients in my baking. After all, they are measured out in millilitres. I use them when measuring water for my bread-maker especially.

With my son we have used a combination of these Avent bottles and the tommee tippee closer to nature bottles. I really like these bottles as they are wide necked so really easy to clean and their larger size means that you can use them as your child grows and drinks more. The bottles are really great quality plastic, the plastic is thicker than the closer to nature bottles and as it is clear plastic has over the last year stayed looking a lot nicer whereas the tommee tippee ones have gone a bit cloudy looking.

The other thing is the measurements on my closer to nature bottles have pretty much been rubbed off, so when I need to measure precise amounts when giving my son formula I have to use these bottles as the measurements on these ones have not come off at all. We have been using these ones more often now anyway as we bought some add on handles so that he can hold it himself to transition to using a cup.
