When Milly the cow looks up at the moon she knows it must be lonely, so she decides to keep it company. The other cows think she's crazy, but Milly continues trying to win the moon's friendship. But this is harder than Milly thinks. After all, how do you get the moon to share its secrets with you?

This is a beautifully written picture book from the author of Hill and Hole and NZ Post Award-winning Old Huhu. In simple but elegant language, Kyle Mewburn tells a funny and whimsical story about friendship and finding where you really belong. Deidre Copeland's stunning illustrations bring Milly, the moon and the nighttime landscape to life.

Another amazing picture book by Kyle Mewburn. Moon Cow tells a wonderful story about a cow who displays all the hallmarks of an excellent friend. There is conflict and apologies, forgiveness and more. This is a story about how to be the right kind of friend and how to be resilient in the face of ridicule. It has repetition at the end of each action, in the way the other cows mock Milly the Cow. So if your children wanted they could join in on the mocking. To be fair, Miss 5 had no interest in doing so.

There is some humour in the book as well. Milly is shown juggling cow pats at one point which got a giggle out of Miss. "What are cow pats?" I said to her. "They are POOS" she replied. "Who would juggle with Poo?" I said. "Not me!" She exclaimed. Still, we liked Milly. She was fun, and friendly and even though she felt like an introvert she did her best to put herself out there. Something the introvert in me is always trying to do as well.

Deidre Copeland's pictures in this book are really neat. The cows' faces are really detailed. They stand out well, even though everything is set at night. Their characters come through in each illustration. Milly is striking and rotund, much like her friend the moon. I loved the facial expressions on the moon too. They really helped carry the story for me and made it more believable too. My daughter enjoyed the book so much she asked me to read it again right away. I read it twice in one sitting, but suggested we save reading number three for another night.
