We got this book recently to help complete our collection of the wonderful Dinosaur Rescue books. Kyle Mewburn and Donovan Bixley come together to bring to life Arg, Hng, and the rest of the village of cave-people. There are dinosaurs too, which sometimes need to be rescued. This is one such adventure book. In this one, Arg is tasked with helping his mate, a friendly T-Rex, save all the dinosaurs from people germs. Everyone is disgustingly sick. This makes for excellent fodder for Mewburn and Bixley who's own creative juices seem to thrive on bodily fluids of any kind. Mewburn is so descriptive that he often turns my stomach. Bixley's illustrations, though black and white just bring the imagery to life on the page in ways that my brain loves to hate. At one point I was reading, and I could feel my body trying to dry-reach. I had to put my hand over the picture at one point to focus my efforts on reading without being sick. Meanwhile my daughter was making awful burping noises and saying "yucky, yucky". I said "should we stop?" but the answer was a firm NO! Like a snot-train-wreck-asaurus, we could not put it down until it was done. Well done guys! Not for the faint hearted, but another fun and funny adventure with Arg and Skeet. Everything we expected wrapped up in 5 chapters. The price is always right with these as well. |

Hahaha! Snot is the grossest thing ever invented and is one of the worst things when you get sick!! One thing I can't stand is SNOT!! so to read a story based upon snot was definitely an experience....it was hilarious...especially reading about the crusty edges of the huge snot ball attached to the dinosaurs nose as Arg tried to push it free. I have really become a fan of these dinosaur rescue books since my niece introduced me to the series of books and I have since had the opportunity to win some books through the KIWIreviews prize section. I have read the books and then re-read them with my niece and have started to read them to the children at my work as an ongoing novel story reading a few pages each day. Again the illustrations are fantastic and totally fit in with the story and gives young children the ability to develop their imaginations and are perfect for children that are transitioning from picture books into more series novels....giving them more words but still allowing room to look at pictures. The 'information' pages throughout the story offer up a good laugh and are written quite well so if an adult is reading the book adds a hint of humour, and talking about neanderthal games such as rock, paper, scissors not even being invented yet, but still Arg tries them out on his family and friends to no success! I totally recommend this series of books...if you are a fan of dinosaurs or just want a good laugh these books fit the bill. |

This was out first Dinosaur Rescue book we have read. My son who is almost 5 has began to enjoy the large Roald Dahl chapter books, with the coloured pictures (fairly recent releases on the old classics). I wasn't too sure how he would go with the black and white pictures in this book, but was keen to get him reading something different, and supporting NZ authors. The books are also a fantastic price - I wouldn't think twice about picking up another one just to have in case we run out of reading material. He loves dinosaurs, and was very excited when I came home with this new "big boys" book. He was mesmerized by the map at the front, wanting to know many details about the route the characters where taking and so forth. I also like that it had a page dedicated to who the characters were, this was helpful for Mr 4. I found some of the words hard to pronounce - but maybe that's 1/2 the fun of reading it!! - not too sure! My son loved reading it, he loved the gross bits and I was relieved it wasn't as crude as the Dahl books we had been reading. I love the modern-ness of the story whilst maintain its authenticity from an era gone by. At times the story was a bit hard to follow for my son, and the last pages of each chapter were challenging for him to understand why there were there. He kept asking me if I was talking, or if it was the book. I think that he is a great age to start reading these books, and they will be kept for years to come for him to enjoy re reading on his own. |

We are slowly working our way through these, the reader of these is only five and these are the first chapter books he has attempted. The reason I have rated them a 10 for value for money is because he is actually a reluctant reader .... but snot and poo and dinosaurs is just too good a combination to miss out on so he was determined to get through it. Being 5 he also considered the black and white illustrations as a "bonus colour the pictures". OK some may find the book pretty gross but, young boys love gross - they delight in it - so it does "speak to" the target audience. This book would be particularly beneficial to younger children who can identify readily with Arg - those who although young, are quite advanced in areas of development themselves and may not necessarily always "fit well" with the rest of society. The storyline is sophisticated enough for such children but maintains a "child's innocence" in the subject matter. For a younger reader the "tangents" (usually with illustrations) can prove distracting and impede the flow of the story but, this can be got around by going through the books and reading and discussing these first. Master 5 say "Arg is awesome - as awesome as Spiderman even - I wish I could go visit in his world and go on an adventure with him. I would wear my Spiderman mask tho just in case the flu takes off again - because I wouldnt want that snot on my face .... ewwwww" |

This was a bit gross. Having said in a previous review that this is okay for age 8 up perhaps 10 years for this book and definitely not after a meal cos it does leave you feeling a little ugh!! Arg's family really are gross. I like to think that the real cavemen weren't as gross as Kyle and Donovan would have them be..... Arg is off on yet another adventure with Skeet and his friend Shlok involving some very snotty stegosaurus's. As with the other books this has black and white illustrations on almost every page. They are very icky but very humorously drawn. Not being a young boy I perhaps don't fully appreciate the need for these books to be quite so gross and wonder if they would have more appeal and a wider audience if all the grossness was toned down because I think the concept is pretty cool. I would introduce these books to my girls if they weren't quite so ugh. If your young reader is into cavemen grossness and dinosaurs then this is the series to go for. Not sure it would appeal to young girls as much..... but then again it might just do! |

Ok so it would seem these books are fill of ick! Older readers who may remember mad magazine will most likely find these books appealing, especially the covers :) and that's this cover reminded me of...a mad magazine. I agree that this may be better for slightly older tweenagers, it's slightly more gross than the other one. But for boys who like that sort if story line it will be just fine. And don't forget the girls out there who are past princesses and dress up, hehe. They are entertaining, interesting and somewhat funny story lines. And yes the story line is again, one that you have to read to see what happens next. Both books would make good stocking stutters for the boys and the price definitely won't break the bank. Plus if they don't like the story they will like the cover! Haha |

This has got to be the most disgusting one I've read so far, I mean, I think human snot is disgusting enough, but dinosaur snot, EWWWWWWWWWWWWW! The cover made me feel a little queasy, so I think I'll bump the age limit to 11+, just to be on the safe side, I think even 10 year-olds will feel queasy when reading this book. There were some fun parts in this story, it wasn't all disgusting, in fact the whole book was reasonably good; I could read this thing again if I was up to it. The cover was the thing that got to me the most, it was the only thing that showed colour, and I find things a lot more disgusting if they are coloured instead of black-and-white. I found that this book had very few similarities to [link^3073^the previous one^link], unlike [[s=boy+beast]]the "Boy vs Beast" series[[/s]], which got very boring after a while, but this one managed to hold all the same unpleasantness and action as book one. I don't have any particular "favourite part", it was all okay, with a few changes in excitement here and there. I think that if you were to buy this book, you would find it a fun adventure story for you or any siblings of yours to enjoy! |
